bethje and I finished watching the Simpsons Season 7 DVD's. There's a feature on the last disc where you can watch the deleted scenes with commentary. I hope they'll include that kind of thing on future season sets.
Today, I watched the new (well, relatively new, anyway) Pixies live DVD. It was pretty good for what it was. Really, the Pixies don't do that much on stage, so they aren't exactly what I would consider a top candidate for a commercial concert video. They're still fun to watch, though. The first song on the disc, "Bone Machine," includes footage from various concerts. It's kind of annoying that it changes so much, so I'm glad they only did it for that one song. The editing on the other songs isn't particularly high quality either, unfortunately. It constantly switches from one camera to another, even when there really isn't any reason to do so. And they sometimes won't show what I should think would be the most obvious thing TO show. During the solo in "Monkey Gone To Heaven," for instance, Joey Santiago hardly appears. I think there are also a few too many audience shots, but that's just my opinion. I'd rather see the band play than watch dorks in the audience doing dorky audience things, like throwing beach balls and (contrary to Frank Black's advice on his third solo album) Passing The Guy, in one case while The Guy is in an innertube. While I'm in critical mode, I'll point out that Kim Deal's vocals seemed too quiet on some songs, particularly "I Bleed" and "Velouria"; but I'll admit that this is most likely not the fault of the video editors. Also, I wish there had been fewer repeats, but what are you going to do?
The interviews in the bonus section (which, as far as I can remember, are only with two people) are mostly just of the "Hey, isn't it really cool that the Pixies got back together and played sold-out concerts?" variety, but there were some interesting things in them. One guy says that, while the band's audience the first time around was predominantly male, there are a whole lot of female fans at the reunion shows. Even though I know a few female Pixies fans myself, I still found this surprising. I read the Frank Black Forum regularly, and that's pretty overwhelmingly male, although there are a few females who post quite frequently. That's dedicated more to Frank's solo work, though. I guess female Pixies fans are less likely to get into that, or at least less likely to post to an Internet forum about it. I was also annoyed that, when listing the places the band played on their 2004 reunion tour, they didn't include the show I attended (which was in Camden, but "Philadelphia" would have sufficed). I mean, the Tweeter Center isn't a particularly nice venue, but why doesn't it deserve a mention?
