Since I'm planning on making a post on my favorite CD's, movies, and such of 2005, I've been trying to access the posts where I used certain tags. For some reason, though, it will only show me my twenty most recent posts per tag, with no way to go back. Is there any way to fix this? If not, the tags are really pretty damned useless, aren't they?

Last night, [livejournal.com profile] bethje and I watched Roger & Me. Well, actually, we only watched the last half hour or so last night. We had seen most of it on Tuesday night, but the copy we got from Netflix was scratched, and wouldn't play the end. The replacement finally arrived yesterday, so we were able to see what we'd missed due to the scratch. Anyway, I've now seen three of Michael Moore's films (the other two being Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11), and I thought this one had less investigative journalism than the others. Perhaps it was closer to a true documentary than Moore's later films, which were more geared toward proving a point. I can understand why some people are bothered by Moore's interviewing tactics, and I realize that most of the people he interviewed about the Flint situation wouldn't have been able to provide any actual answers. Still, I have to say that anyone whose advice to a laid-off worker is "just go find another job" is incredibly rude. It ain't that easy. But I guess it's easy to give advice like that when you're rich. Overall, it was a pretty depressing movie, all the more so because it was a true story. And I could have done without seeing a woman club a rabbit to death.

Incidentally, I got some spam with the subject line: "Did you have a sex yesterday?" Why, no. I was gender-neutral. Thanks for asking. {g}

I remember seeing Roger & Me on Bravo around this time in 1996 when I was in 8th grade. I remember liking it because of the people he interviewed. But all I remember right now is "Rabbit Lady" and "Color Me Beautiful Lady".

But what was the purpose of the "Rabbit Lady" being interviewed? I know she bred rabbits, and made rabbit soup, and lucky rabbit paws out of her rabbits, but what else? Why was she in the film?

I think the point of the Rabbit Lady was to show the desperate lengths to which the people of Flint would go to make some money.

When I go to a page of tagged entries, I still have the "previous X entries" link at the bottom, and when I click it takes me to the previous 10 (in my case) entries with the same tag. Maybe it varies by style? (I'm using Smooth Sailing.)

Yeah, I don't remember having these problems with the last style I used, so you're probably right. I spent so much time trying to get the colors right on this style that I'm reluctant to change it until January, though. It might make sense to wait until January to make best-of-2005 posts anyway, since I'm planning on seeing more movies and concerts this month.

I've seen Roger and Me - as part of my film studies topic on documentary. It was one of the most engaging films we watched, and surprisingly, one of the least disturbing. It was very depressing, though. I also found it even in the obnoxious stakes - he kind of views the residents of Flint with as much contempt as he does the politicians he's condemning.

Really? I didn't get the impression that he had contempt for the citizens of Flint. Well, maybe the ones who went on to be famous, but certainly not the "regular poor people."

What other documentaries did you see and which were more disturbing? Whenever I hear someoen describe a movie as disturbing or hard to watch, it flies right onto my Netflix queue.

You didn't? Hmm, maybe it was just my interpretation of the Rabbit Lady scenes and everything then :D

Ooh, we watched several hours of Shoah - which is a documentation of interviews about the Holocaust. A french documentary showing the graphic representation of an autopsy which had a name I can't remember, but was something about needing to see with your own eyes.

To be honest I've sort of blocked a lot of these memories out in the past few years since taking the course.

I think Moore has a tendency to come off as rude even when talking to the people he's trying to present as victims. He also often shows provocative footage in his films, even when it's of questionable relevance and/or taste. I think this is among the reasons why some people don't like him much, and I think these criticisms are actually valid, unlike the "Anyone who presents the American status quo as anything less than saintly is in league with the terrorists!!!!!!111" criticism that Moore also gets. That said, I don't think he'd even bother making a film like Roger & Me if he didn't want the viewers to be sympathetic toward the people of Flint. I think we're supposed to be disturbed by the Rabbit Lady scenes, but at the same time, understand what dire financial straits a person would have to be in to sell rabbits for food. But any film can be interpreted different ways by different viewers.
