Last night, they reran "Milhouse of Sand and Fog," the Simpsons episode that I'd missed the first time, so I was able to watch it. I must say I wasn't that impressed. The Van Houtens getting back together was a good idea, but it was never really resolved. There were some funny Milhouse bits, like his Oklahoma! hoedown fantasy and his statement that the dummy smelled like Bart, but it caused less laughs overall than other recent episodes. I also think Homer deciding not to trust Marge was dumb even for him, and the exaggerated action endings are getting a little old. I was going to be an annoying continuity nerd and point out that Milhouse already had chicken pox (during the Armour Hot Dogs song in "Lady Bouvier's Lover"), but we never actually see him with chicken pox in this episode, so maybe he was just attending the pox party out of loneliness or something.

I listened to Last Splash today. It was the first time I'd heard a Breeders album, and I think it was kind of a mixed bag. Most of the songs didn't really click with me. I did like "I Just Wanna Get Along," "Divine Hammer," and "Drivin' On 9," though. Also "Cannonball," of course, but I already knew that one.

I got this from [livejournal.com profile] lozenger8:

1) Was 2005 a good year for you?
It was okay, I guess. It would have been better if I'd found full-time work.

2) What was your favorite moment of the year?
I don't really have one.

3) What was your least favorite moment of the year?
I don't really have one of THESE, either.

4) Where were you when 2005 began?
At [livejournal.com profile] bethje's house

5) Who were you with?
Beth

6) Where will you be when 2005 ends?
Brooklyn

7) Who will you be with when 2005 ends?
Beth, They Might Be Giants, and a bunch of people I don't know

8) Did you keep your new years resolution of 2005?
I didn't have any.

9) Do you have a new years resolution for 2006?
No.

10) Did you fall in love in 2005?
Not anew.

11) If so who?
Beth

12) If yes, do they know?
Yes

13) Did you have a relationship with this person?
Yes

14) You regret it?
No

15) Did you breakup with anyone in 2005?
Fortunately, no.

16) Did you make any new friends in 2005?
Some new people added me as LJ friends. Does that count?

17) Who are your favourite new friends?
Do you really think I'd play favorites, even if I HAD friends?

18) What was your favourite month of 2005?
No idea. July might have been the worst, since that's when I got that ear infection. On the other hand, that was also the month that the new Harry Potter book came out, so maybe it balances out.

19) Did you travel outside of the US in 2005?
Nope.

20) How many different states did you travel to in 2005?
Let's see...Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, and New Mexico. That's five. And I live in one and spend about half my time in another.

21) Did you lose anybody close to you in 2005?
Fortunately, no.

22) Did you miss anybody in the past year?
Yeah, I guess.

23) What was your favourite movie that you saw in 2005?
If you mean a new movie, then maybe Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? As far as older movies go, I probably saw more this year than any other year in my life, and I'd be hard pressed to say which one was my favorite.

24) What was your favourite song from 2005?
Probably either "The Mariner's Revenge Song," by the Decemberists; or "Psychedelic Polka," by Hypnotic Clambake

25) What was your favourite record from 2005?
I think that honor would have to go to the New Pornographers' Twin Cinema.

26) How many concerts did you see in 2005?
11, I believe. TMBG twice, Tori Amos twice (once with Matt Nathanson, and once with The Like and the Ditty Bops), Ben Folds twice (once with Corn Mo, and once with Ben Lee and Rufus Wainwright), David Lowery and Johnny Hickman, the Pixies, the Decemberists, the New Pornographers, and The Last Car with PiƱataland. I'm also going to be seeing TMBG twice more before the year is over.

27) Did you have a favourite concert in 2005?
Yeah, I think I might say it was the Decemberists concert, although the New Pornographers, The Last Car, and the Lowery/Hickman show were also serious contenders for the title.

28) Did you drink a lot of alcohol in 2005?
No, I can't say I did.

29) Did you do a lot of drugs in 2005?
Well, technically, I guess I did more than usual, since I had to medicate myself when I had the ear infection. That's still not exactly "a lot," though; and I participated in the exact same amount of recreational drug use as usual (i.e., none).

30) How many people did you sleep with in 2005?
95 or 98, depending on whether robots and clones count.

31) Did you do anything you are ashamed of this year?
I'm sure I did, but I can't think of anything just now.

33) What was the worst lie someone told you in 2005?
Um...it's too late to say anything about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, isn't it?

34) Did you treat somebody badly in 2005?
I hope not!

35) Did somebody treat you badly in 2005?
No, I don't think so.

36) How much money did you spend in 2005?
Too much.

37) What was your proudest moment of 2005?
I don't know. I'm rather proud of getting a story into Oziana, but I'm pretty sure I said that was my proudest moment of LAST year. It's been taking a while for the issue to be published.

38) What was your most embarrassing moment of 2005?
I don't know, and I'd rather not think about it.

39) If you could go back in time to any moment of 2005 and change something, what would it be?
Man, this survey is too hard for me. I think I'm going to need to switch over to the remedial edition.

40) What are your plans for 2006?
What I WANT to do is get a job, but I can't exactly plan on that. I don't really have any specific plans yet.

Finally, Beth got her copy of TMBG's Venue Songs DVD today, so we'll probably watch that tonight.

Oh, so they're back together? I don't like that. I like Kirk Van Houten as this loser.

It was never actually resolved. They had a "trial un-separation," and Bart and Milhouse tried to break them up again, but we never saw whether they decided to stay together or not.

that made me laugh, a lot.

I feel like a slacker, I haven't been doing all the memes you post :P I like this one, though. I might be giants do it.

I kinda liked that episode, but IIRC, it's another of the frequent of the "Hey, we only have 20 minutes instead of 22! Let's get around that by just chopping the last two minutes off!" episodes. Which... yeah. Gets kind of annoying.

I only have Last Splash, though I've heard Title TK a few times, and it seems that the Breeders are pretty good, but much more uneven than Frank Black. It kinda makes me wonder if that's why Kim Deal basically got one song every other Pixies record. She was better than that, but I think there's a reason it wasn't really half and half. I would have probably wanted to give her maybe 3 or 4 songs per Pixies record, though (which would have the bonus of amking them that much longer...)

Yeah, the last line was amusing enough, but it left so much unresolved.

Which songs did Kim write, anyway? I think she co-wrote "Silver," and either totally wrote or co-wrote "Gigantic." She sings "Into The White," but I'm pretty sure Frank wrote the song. I'm not sure who wrote "Bam Thwok." Of these songs, I'm not that fond of "Silver," but the other three are quite good.

I think that actually might be it, although I think she wrote "Silver" alone, and co-wrote "Gigantic". Frank wrote "into the White" like you say (and even seems to be singing it sometimes), I've heard Kim wrote "Bam Thwok" though, and I seem to think there was one co-written one on Come On Pilgrim, but I can't figure out which it'd be, so I'm thinking I'm misremembering. I like "Silver" quite a bit, though. It's one of my favorites from Doolittle, actually.

Frank Black Francis has a remixed version of "Into The White" sung entirely by Frank. Even before I knew for sure that he wrote it, I suspected as much, due to the lyrics.
