Earlier tonight, [livejournal.com profile] bethje bought me dinner at Denny's for my birthday. My birthday is technically until tomorrow, but I'm going to work in the morning and then going back home, so we couldn't very well do anything together then. Anyway, I had the Meat Lovers' Scramble, which I think they might have gotten wrong, since I believe meat is supposed to be scrambled IN with the eggs. I didn't even think about this until I'd already eaten most of the food, though. The pancakes were good, but the ham wasn't so much. For dessert, I had the Caramel Apple Crisp.

After dinner, we went to Target, so Beth could buy cat treats. I wanted to buy some chapstick while I was there, because I always forget to get it, and then end up biting my lips and making them worse. It's a bad habit of mine. I couldn't find any chapstick except for the stuff at the register that was also sunblock, so I guess I'll have to buy some elsewhere. I'm sure they had other kinds at Target, but I don't know where they were. While we were in the store, I overheard some couple talking about a duck in the Christmas section. Their conversation went something like this:

WOMAN: It sings Christmas carols...It QUACKS Christmas carols.
MAN: That would drive me the fuck insane.
WOMAN: Well, I'm getting it!

And speaking of Christmas carols, at least one radio station in the area has already started playing nothing but Christmas music. We heard two or three different versions of "Sleigh Ride" while in the car. I would have thought they'd want to wait until at least Thanksgiving before doing that, but whatever.

Beth also gave me some birthday presents: the new three-disc Wizard of Oz DVD set, the book Lies My Teacher Told Me (which I hadn't asked for, but I'm interested in reading), and the Fastbacks album Zucker. I think it's cool that the DVD set includes a few of L. Frank Baum's silent films, but it omits The Patchwork Girl of Oz for some reason. Beth's mom gave me a shirt, and her Uncle John gave me the Dresden Dolls' self-titled album. They were all very nice gifts.

At most Targets, the lipbalm is like on the cold medicine aisle.

Chapstick at Target is in the same section with the band aids. If it's the one on Chemical Road, it's in aisle f4 on the right (if you're facing the pharmacy.)

*snerk* I love overhearing conversations.

Happy birthday!

Thanks!

Your gifts ended up rocking.

Yes, that's one major advantage to having an Amazon wishlist, I suppose.

As for the duck, it would probably drive me crazy after a while, too. That lady kept making it quack over and over again at the store. My mom actually gave her mom a frog that croaks Christmas songs, which is fun occasionally, as long as you don't overdo it. And none of those things are anywhere NEAR as bad as those singing rubber fish.

When I was younger, I always kind of wanted one of those Billy Basses. Never GOT one, since, I think even then I realised that it'd be all hell of annoying, but still.

Actually, my birthday is the 18th, which is yesterday now, but it was today when you made the comment. Anyway, thank you! It was pretty fun, even if it felt kind of long. I ended up working two jobs in the same day, which I'm not used to doing, even though I worked nowhere near a full day between the two.

Happy Birthday! I'd offer you some Ozcream, but that was a corny Oz-pun even in 1932.

How do the silent films look compared to previous releases (if you've watched them yet)?

How about some Ozade, then? Or maybe lacasa?

I think the word "Ozcream" was first used in The Cowardly Lion of Oz, published in 1923, but I could be wrong. (I mean, I know the word was used in that book, but don't know for sure that it wasn't used before that.)

I haven't watched the silent films (or, indeed, anything on the DVD's) yet, but I'm sure I'll write something about them when I do. I hope the music on His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz is better than it is on the other DVD release I have.

32, 23, same thing...

I actually liked some of the music, at least when it coincided with the events (like at the end of SCARECROW in my edition). Most of it was so weird and off though.

I think a fair amount of the music used for the silent films on the new DVD release is from Oz-related projects. I recognized "Baffin's Bay," one of Paul Tietjens' songs from the 1902 stage play.

Glad you liked it. I think they really shine as performance art. I don't know if I would have loved their music as much as I do without having seem them perform it. You can also check out the video section of their web site for both released videos and a couple of live videos. Their web site itself is a little convoluted, but fun to explore. I personally enjoy the section were they print the best hate mail they get.

I just watched some of the videos they have up there. I liked that Halloween medley. They look like they'd put on a good live show.

Ha ha. That's about the way the conversation goes when I talk with my husband about getting bagpipes. :D

I think I'd rather someone I lived with get bagpipes than a carol-quacking duck, but I don't know.
