This evening, I drove out to Philadelphia to see the Decemberists at the Electric Factory. I was considering taking the train, but I wasn't sure it would end in time for me to catch the last train back. I probably will take the train when I see the New Pornographers next week, though.

Anyway, the doors opened at a little after 7:30. After getting in, I went to the merchandise table and bought a T-shirt, a small "16 Military Wives" poster, and a sticker. It wasn't until around 8:45 that the opening act took the stage. In the meantime, monitors showed the typical pre-concert fare, including some short film about distances and powers of ten that I had remembered seeing before at an air and space museum. There were also occasional weird messages on the monitor, like "hit your best friend," followed by "no one's hitting." During an episode of Gumby, it said, "Gumby's mom is a MILF," which is just wrong on so many levels.

The opening band was Cass McCombs, a mostly uninteresting acoustic trio. They did have one good song, though. After they had finished, the house music was a version of Peter and the Wolf, which was kind of weird (the fact that they would play it, that is, not the version itself).

Eventually, the Decemberists took the stage, and opened with a long song I didn't recognize. As I suspected, it was "The Tain," a five-part song that's on an EP I don't have. They followed this up with "July, July!" (possibly my favorite Decemberists song), and I THINK the next song was "Los Angeles, I'm Yours." They did a lot of songs from Picaresque, including "16 Military Wives," "The Engine Driver," "On The Bus Mall," "We Both Go Down Together," "Eli, The Barrow Boy" (complete with banjo), and "The Sporting Life." They also played "The Legionnaire's Lament," and Colin Meloy did "My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist" without the rest of the band. The last song in the regular set was "The Mariner's Revenge," during which we were ordered to scream as if we were being swallowed by a whale. The first encore was a song I'm not sure I knew, but Colin climbed up on the balcony during it. During the very last song of the night, "The Chimbley Sweep," there was an extended solo that included a duel with bows, and Colin made those of us in the audience kneel down on the floor. That was kind of uncomfortable, but certainly not something I'd ever experienced at a concert before. It was a really fun concert. I wasn't sure what to expect, but not only do they have excellent songs, but they're also great showpersons (assuming that's the appropriate gender-neutral form of "showmen").

Brilliant! You are a Wizard!

Wizards are spells-casters who study powerful arcane magic. While
Wizards tend to be pretty fragile, some of those spells can pack quite
a punch. Unlike Clerics, Wizards arent as good at fixing people as
they are at breaking them, so watch where you toss that fireball

Your most distinctive trait is your intelligence. You're probably well learned and logical, if perhaps a bit fragile.

Hey, wizards are cool.

You Are A: Groundhog!

groundhogGroundhogs are cuddly-looking and timid mammals that eat mostly grass, seeds, and other vegetation. As a groundhog you will rarely stray far from your burrow and will run in the face of danger, but you will defend their home fiercely from predators. Groundhogs are even given their own holiday in the US, during which a groundhog is said to predict how long winter weather will last!

Do you always buy merchandise from concerts you go to?

Not always, but often. I like to get some kind of souvenir, especially if it's the first time I'm seeing a band. I wear my band-related shirts quite often, so those are a pretty good investment. I haven't had a chance to do anything with the posters I've bought, but I hopefully will someday.

The film is Powers of Ten by Charles and Ray Eames -- they actually just released a DVD set of their shorts! I'm totally going to pick that up when I get paid. Or at least, some point down the line.

Oh, the show sounds like it was great! Now I'm looking forward even more to seeing them in a couple weeks. Thanks for your report.

Oh, and since I love replying to my own comments, there was a question I wanted to ask you—in his normal speaking voice, does Colin use a British accent? I'm very curious about that.

No, he really doesn't. I thought maybe I could hear a minor hint of one, but I was probably imagining that, because I WANTED it to be there. {g}

Haha, great, thanks. That guy's a kook. Did you know he's from Montana and not British at all? He cracks me up.

Yeah, I found that out recently. I think he does a pretty good British accent for an American, but then, maybe that's just because I'm not British.

Yeah, I also find it very convincing, so much so that after I found out he's just a regular old American, I went around literally for days afterwards saying, "I can't believe he's not actually British!" For days! Thus driving everyone around me nuts. :P

I am so insanely jealous of you!

Sort of funny story thing: My aunt just emailed me: "I really like this song, and I think you will too. It's got a bit of a TMBGish sound to it."

And attached? The Legionnaire's Lament. This is the same aunt that got me into TMBG, btw.

Anyways. It amused me. And I'm so jealous that you saw them!!! What does the poster look like?

It was the first of these two posters. They were selling the other one, too.

I believe it's the artwork for the upcoming single.

The Decemberists are here tonight. I want to go but I really, really do not have money. And I don't think I like them enough to go to a show by myself.
