A Variation on a Meme
Sep. 24th, 2005 05:55 pmWhen doing the random musician picture meme last week, I got the idea to just do a list of my favorite musicians, with pictures. I'm going to include five each of male and female artists.
MALE:
1. Andy Partridge

The lead singer and songwriter for XTC, and probably my favorite singer and songwriter out there. He's written an amazing variety of songs, and while his voice might not be what you'd call technically great, there's a definite appeal to it. Maybe it's just because Americans love British accents, but I think there's more to it than that.
2. John Linnell

Yes, like many people, but unlike
bethje, I have a slight preference for this John over his partner from They Might Be Giants. I think it's largely because his songs tend to be catchier and lyrically weirder. Plus, he plays the accordion, and it's hard to go wrong with that.
3. John Flansburgh

Coming up right behind the other permanent member of TMBG, Flans doesn't fall that far behind Linnell. He has a lot of great songs, and is often more willing to experiment with the music than Linnell is. (While it doesn't always work out, I think it's generally a fair conclusion that Linnell writes odder lyrics, and Flans odder music.) Besides, I think he's a better overall singer, and can pull off a lounge voice quite well, as on "Reprehensible" (probably my favorite vocal performance of any TMBG song).
4. Frank Black

Born Charles Michael Kitteridge Thompson IV, and formerly Black Francis, Frank has written a lot of amazing songs, both with the Pixies and by himself. I also like his voice, especially when he sings falsetto.
5. Scott McCaughey

Leader of the Young Fresh Fellows and the Minus 5, Scott seems to have worked with just about everybody in the music world, yet so few people know who he is. He's a very prolific and underrated songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
FEMALE:
1. Tori Amos

The first female musician I ever really got into (my musical tastes are generally pretty male-dominated), and still my favorite. She's really talented, and her songs are weird (in a good way).
2. Neko Case

As with most female musicians, Beth got me into her.
3. Laura Cantrell

Another female country singer, but this time one with direct links to TMBG.
4. Carolyn Mark

She wins points for hugging Beth and me after a concert.
5. Kim Deal

I have to admit that I'm not really familiar with much of her post-Pixies work (i.e., the Breeders and the Amps), but her contributions to the Pixies are good enough for her to be included in my list.
If anyone else wants to do this (with or without the pictures), go ahead. I'd like to be responsible for starting a meme (although I'm sure something very like this is already going around).
