This afternoon, [livejournal.com profile] bethje and I finally saw Batman Begins. There was only one other person in the theater with us, and he was a guy who laughed loudly at the preview for The Pink Panther. I liked the film, and I thought it had good explanations for Batman's various accessories. At first, I wondered why there would be a cave full of bats beneath Wayne Manor, but they actually explained it in the movie, which is worth some points. I liked the Scarecrow as a villain, as well as how the plot came full circle in having the organization that trained Bruce Wayne end up being behind the plot to destory Gotham City. I think I understand what [livejournal.com profile] onib meant about the plot not making much sense as far the laws of physics go, but it didn't bother me too much. While the Batman series never seems to resort to giving characters magic powers and the like, there's a pretty significant fudge factor as far as what technology and chemistry can accomplish. Anyway, it was a good movie, and I'm glad I got to see it while it was still in theaters.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to mention that they apparently weren't aiming for continuity with the other recent Batman movies, since they had a different guy kill Bruce's parents. I think the Joker killing them was something made up for the first Tim Burton Batman film, though, so maybe they were trying to establish a more comic-accurate continuity with Begins. Since I haven't actually read any of the Batman comics, though, I wouldn't know for sure.

After the movie, we took Beth's dog Dewey and cat Wally to the vet. The vet told us that most cats are left-handed (left-pawed?), which I'd never known before.

I feel like I should add something else to end this entry, but I can't think of anything. I did have some good pizza for dinner, so that's something, I suppose. So, yeah.

I had to have this explained to me by my boyfriend, a comic book nerd. The most recent Batman movie and whatever ones will follow it are apparently meant to be completely separate from the Burton/Schumacher films. There are a bunch of different Batman storylines in the comics but in nearly all of them, Joe Chill is the murderer of Bruce's parents, and as far as I know Joker never was.

Incidentally, I hadn't seen the first Batman movie in years so at first it seemed to me like the end of this movie tied in nicely with the next one, then I realized it actually totally doesn't, so I was relieved to learn it isn't supposed to. :)

I saw the first Batman movie recently, and aside from the fact that a different guy killed the Waynes, Begins also ended with the implication that the Joker was already the Joker. In the first film, he was just Jack Napier until Batman himself pushed him into a vat of chemicals.

I really really did not like Batman Begins. I was SOOO pissed off by the Joker thing. Yes, I know that was a comic thing, but 99% of the world thinks the Joker killed the Waynes, and then we find out everything we know is wrong. Madness!

And I also thought it damned stupid he was a ninja. hehe.

Has there even been a comic-based movie that you liked?

As for the different killer, I sort of agree, but the whole Batman story has been changed so many times anyway. I mean, the first Burton movie was a far cry from the Adam West series, which was probably how most non-comic-fans knew Batman prior to that. That said, I do think they should try to keep certain details consistent between versions. Since it looks like it was actually Burton (or the screenwriter on his film, anyway) who changed the identity of the Waynes' killer, I guess it's not fair to say the blame lies with the makers of Begins.

And I also thought it damned stupid he was a ninja.

I remember seeing an episode or two of the Batman animated series where they talked about how Bruce had trained in a samurai dojo in Japan. So I think this has been part of Batman's back story for a while now. (Of course, there's a significant difference between samurai and ninja, but Western media tend to portray them as pretty much the same.)

I liked Hellboy. I had no knowledge of the backstory, however, so that didn't bother me. I didn't like X-Men, and I knew nothing of THAT backstory.

I didn't care that much for X-Men, but I think that's partially because I DID know the backstory. Well, I used to watch the cartoon, anyway, and I would guess that it's closer to the comics than the movie was. I could be wrong, though. Anyway, the movie's Rogue sort of seemed like a combination of the cartoon's Rogue and Jubilee, which weakened her. I liked her better as the explicitly Southern adult she was in the cartoon. Also, the movie's Cyclops really had no personality whatsoever.

Interesting about the majority of cats being left-pawed... I wonder how one determines whether their feline is a lefty or a righty.

It's whichever paw they usually use for batting, grabbing, and the like.

I was wondering the same thing. Interesting.

Pink Panther with Steve Martin, right? Meh. I like Steve Martin but come on, Peter Sellers! Come on! You can't improve on that!

Yeah, it's the remake with Steve Martin. I've never actually seen the original, and I don't plan to see the remake.
