Remember Koom Valley!
Sep. 9th, 2005 12:58 pmI saw a few copies of Terry Pratchett's new book, Thud!, at Borders today. I didn't know it was out yet, so that's cool. I read the beginning of the book, and it's pretty cool so far. I didn't buy it, though. I'm always getting coupons for Borders, but they're never valid at times when they might actually be useful. Actually, I DO have one that's good through Sunday where I can get $10 off a $40 purchase, but that means I'd have to add something else. While I'm sure I COULD find something, would I really be saving much money if I did that? And is that a particularly good deal anyway? Too bad the companion book, Where's My Cow?, isn't out yet, because together they would have cost just a little over $40.
While at Borders, I also took a look at the new book about Belle and Sebastian. I'd be interested in reading it, especially since I like their music a lot but usually can't figure out what the songs are actually ABOUT, but I don't really want to pay $17 for a hardcover copy. Maybe I'll wait for the paperback, or see if the library gets it (although I doubt they will).
To pad out this entry, I'm going to throw in a few top five lists that nobody asked me to write, but I wanted to do anyway.

Date: 2005-09-09 11:49 pm (UTC)Huh, I didn't know it was out yet either. But I'm probably too cheap to buy it-- I wonder when the library will get it. Maybe I'll just go and sit in a bookstore and read it there. Wonder if I can get away with that.

Date: 2005-09-10 02:07 am (UTC)I haven't been buying most of the recent Discworld books, although I plan to go back and do so at some point. I used to always buy them when I was at college, since the library in Indiana never got the new ones (at the time of our junior year, they had exactly three books from the series: The Colour of Magic, Sourcery, and Wyrd Sisters), but the library around here always gets them. There's pretty much always a waiting list for the new ones, though, so I put myself on the waiting list. If I end up buying it, I can always cancel the hold. I sort of wanted to buy it because I'm planning on going to a signing on Wednesday, but my plan now is to either buy it at the signing (maybe there will be some kind of discount, although I tend to doubt it), or else just wait for the library copy. Either way, I'll bring a different book to the signing. If I don't buy it at the signing but decide I want to own it, I'll probably order it from Amazon, since they're selling it for considerably less than Borders.

Probably. Bookstores, especially the big chain ones, seem to be pretty lax about that kind of thing nowadays. And they usually have pretty comfortable chairs, too.
