So, it's Labor Day, and I am indeed laboring. Okay, it's not really fair to call what I do "labor," but I AM working, the reason being that the jury selection I have starting tomorrow means I'm not sure when else I can do my hours. It's okay, though. I like being the only person at work.

I was going to write about a dream I had last night, and then I forgot about it. Then, later, I remembered, so here it is. I was working at a library, and it was about to close. I had most of the computers turned off, and the security guard was supposedly on his way. The guard didn't show up, though, and more people just kept coming in and turning on the computers. I think the weather was supposed to be icy or something outside. Anyway, this was all really annoying for me, since I was supposed to have left already. Finally, the security guy showed up, and then I woke up. There. Isn't it good I remembered that dream? :P

I wonder if I should start keeping a notebook of dreams, like my dad used to. It would keep me from forgetting them, I guess, but it strikes me as a bit, well, new-agey. I don't really want to record them for any pseudo-psychoanalytical purpose, though, but more so I can use them in the future. My dream about the two-bodied, shape-shifting giant, and the one about the post office staffed by giant rabbits who accidentally shredded an important letter are just begging to be written about.

Let's see. What else? I've been playing a little bit of the first Phantasy Star game, which is pretty fun, even though I haven't gotten very far. That's a series I've been interested in for some time, but I could never play, since I didn't have a Genesis. (Actually, I DO have a used Genesis that I picked up for a few dollars a while back, but it didn't have the cord I needed to connect it to the TV. Maybe I should try looking for one again. Do you think eBay would have one?) Anyway, there's a Game Boy Advance cartridge with the first three PS games, so that should keep me entertained for a while. I really should get back to Final Fantasy II and Mario and Luigi at some point, but I'm stuck at fairly difficult parts in both of those games.

I should probably change at least one or two of my icons (I think I'll keep my main Wart one for a while longer), but I'm not sure what to use. Pictures that I think will make good icons rarely look good when reduced to the necessary size. I really don't like coming up with icons, but I feel like I should change them periodically. I also feel like it would somehow be wrong to use icons made by someone else. (Well, if they were made specifically for me, that would be a different story. I just don't want to have an icon that's exactly the same as someone else's, if I can help it.) So you can see how it's kind of a difficult situation for me. {g}

Oh,definitely keep a dream notebook. Once you get started, you find your dreams are easier to remember anyway when you get in the practice. Then because I'm obsessive that way I ended up typing up a lot of mine just so I could index it all by subject, so if I thought, "I'm looking for a dream about giant rabbits shredding letters" (not that I ever had that dream, but if YOU had an indexed dream book) I could just look up "rabbits" or "letters" or something and find the exact page. But only bother with that if you have a lot of time on your hands and are feeling obsessive. And dream analysis is fun, too-- it's only new-agey if you look at it that way. Like there's a dream site I like a lot but there's a lot of people who post on it like everything's some deep message from the spirit world, which is annoying. But if you think of it as being that your dreams are your mind filing away the thoughts and events of the day, instead you just see connections you might not have noticed in your waking life. Not that giant letter-eating rabbits are really part of your real life, but that one might be interpreted as you having something important that you wanted to communicate but you felt like little things that were really big things were appearing magically all over the place to keep you from saying what you wanted to say. Or something like that.

Well, I think one reason I had that dream last night was because stuff like that has actually happened in the past. Not to that extent, but there HAVE been occasions when security was significantly late. I have a lot of dreams where I feel trapped.

As for interpretation, I'm a little annoyed at the dream dictionaries that say things like, "Whenever there's a cat in anybody's dream, that symbolizes curiosity," or whatever. I think it's more relative and personal than that. I guess the reference books are okay as a starting point, though.

Yeah, that's exactly it, they're starting points-- sometimes they give you ideas you hadn't thought of before. But what it really is is word association. If you play word association with the symbols in your dreams you usually come up with something that seems right to YOU. (Actually most of the dream dictionaries I've seen seem to indicate that cats represent back-stabbing females, or something like that!)

Well, the cat/curiosity connection was just a play on an old adage, not anything from an actual dream dictionary. {g} I know I don't associate cats with backstabbing, though, or even particularly with females.

You know what that probably means? That if YOU dream about a cat, it probably DOES have to do with curiosity!

I like it when folks have dream LJs. Ben ([livejournal.com profile] toddler_hiway) started his with that intention, but then it quickly drifted away from the original plan.

I like the dream notebook idea too, since usually by the time I might want to write them here, I've forgotten everything. I know I've had plenty that would have made good stories, but I can't remember them now.
