The nerds on the Internet are not geeks
Aug. 26th, 2005 01:02 pmYesterday,
bethje and I went to Great Adventure. It wasn't really the best day to go, since the place was crowded. It was cooler than it had been in the recent past, though, and I wanted to take full advantage of our season passes. We were only able to ride a few rides: Batman, the Musik Express, the Skyway (which was actually running for once), the Runaway Train, and Medusa. I had wanted to ride Nitro, which is probably my favorite ride there (and definitely my favorite roller coaster there), but we tried twice, and the line was barely moving both times. In fact, the first time, it seemed like they weren't running it at all. We DID get to hear some guy argue with a security guard, though. At around the same time, another guard went after a guy who was trying to cut in line. That's about the only time I've ever seen the guards there actually do anything. Usually, people cut in line right in front of them, and they just stand there.
While there, we used a coupon that let us get free fries if we bought two foot-long hot dogs and a medium drink. The weird thing is that the hot dogs come with potato chips, so it was a very potato-heavy offer. We ended up bringing the chips home, but the hot dogs were very good. Still not totally worth the outrageous price they charged, perhaps, but good food nonetheless.
After leaving the park, we went back to Beth's and watched What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, a pretty good movie that I'd never seen before. And today, we're going to be heading over to the Monster-Mania Convention, so expect a report on that in the near future.
I got both of these from
arfies.
That's probably pretty accurate. I consider myself a nerd, and I don't mind that. I also know I'm a dork, although I'm not proud of it. I don't think I'm particularly geeky, though, because I see geeks as people who have useful knowledge. You know, like being able to fix computers and such. I'm more the kind of guy who knows a lot about a few useless subjects, and then a little bit about a lot of other things.
I do think some of the questions on the test should have had more than two choices. But now I'm just being nerdy, aren't I? :P
And the meme:
Name five things you would like to do in your lifetime, and then tag five friends to do the same.
1. Have something I write get published.
2. Get my own place to live.
3. For that matter, I'd like to be financially secure in general.
4. Learn to play a musical instrument at least passably.
5. Take ballroom dancing lessons.

| Outcast Genius 69 % Nerd, 52% Geek, 73% Dork |
For The Record: A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia. A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one. A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions. You scored better than half in all three, earning you the title of: Outcast Genius. Outcast geniuses usually are bright enough to understand what society wants of them, and they just don't care! They are highly intelligent and passionate about the things they know are *truly* important in the world. Typically, this does not include sports, cars or make-up, but it can on occassion (and if it does then they know more than all of their friends combined in that subject). Outcast geniuses can be very lonely, due to their being outcast from most normal groups and too smart for the room among many other types of dorks and geeks, but they can also be the types to eventually rule the world, ala Bill Gates, the prototypical Outcast Genius. Congratulations! |

Monster-Mania convention? What's that involve?

Date: 2005-08-29 04:37 am (UTC)I wrote all about the convention in my most recent post. Basically, it's devoted to horror movies.
My results...

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd.
Nerds didn't use to be cool, but in the 90's that all changed. It used
to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a
pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world
that you couldn't quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and
geeky have eked out for themselves a modicum of respect at the very
least, and "geek is chic." The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent,
knowledgable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing
computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). They are the one
you want as your lifeline in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (or the one
up there, winning the million bucks)!
Congratulations!
Also, you might want to check out some of my other tests if you're interested in either of the following:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Professional Wrestling
Love & Sexuality
Thanks Again!
Hahahaha. I'd say that's probably about right.

Yeah... I'm going to ask you this because of all people you might also have this issue... like a third choice on the one about "Do you know where your library card is?" I mean, where was the choice, "ONE CARD? SINGULAR?"
Yeah, it's true. There are currently six different library cards in my wallet. Granted I haven't used two of them over a year.
I don't think being a geek means having a lot of USEFUL knowledge on a subject. Just ANY knowledge. You're an Oz geek, I think. I'm a rock geek. Actually the test said I wasn't geeky enough to be considered a geek, for which I am sad, but maybe that's because I'm a rock geek and geeks aren't supposed to be into rock or something, but that's an old stereotype because rock isn't cool anymore, you have to be into hip-hop to be cool, so whatever.

Date: 2005-08-29 04:51 am (UTC)I suppose rock is cool in certain circles, but I don't know. I don't usually pay that much attention to musical trends.
