Come pick me up, I've landed
Aug. 8th, 2005 01:17 pmSo, the Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright show last night was at the Borgata, which neither
bethje nor I had ever been to. All I really knew about them was that they were a Vegas-style casino (whatever THAT means), and that they weigh in their waitresses to make sure they haven't put on too much weight. Apparently the patrons don't want fat chicks delivering their free drinks, or something. It's a really stupid, disciminatory policy that doesn't seem like it should be legal. But that's not really relevant to the main point of this post, which is the concert.
The show was general admission, and had a standing-room-only area in the front, with seats behind it. Most of the seats were already full, but we managed to find some in the very back. We're getting too old to stand through a whole concert. {g} The opener was Ben Lee, whom we'd seen open for the other Ben at a Philadelphia show some time ago. I think I liked him better this time, though.
Next came Rufus, who played for around fifty mintues to an hour. I've never been able to get Really Into Rufus, but I like him pretty well. He's a good singer with a unique voice, and had some amusing banter in between (and occasionally in the middle of) his songs. I think my favorite song that he did was "Vibrate." He also played "Hallelujah," which was the only song in his set that I really knew beforehand. His younger sister sang backing vocals on that and one other song.
Ben Folds played for about the same amount of time as Rufus, and his set consisted of a lot of the same stuff he did last time we saw him. He did his version of Dr. Dre's "Bitches Ain't Shit" again, which was cool. Other songs he played included "Bastard," "Gone," "Still Fighting It," "Zak And Sara," "Jesusland," "You To Thank," "Landed," "All U Can Eat," "Philosophy," "Late," and "Not The Same." As with last time, he closed with "One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces," and finished by throwing his stool at the piano. The biggest surprise of the night was when Corn Mo showed up, seemingly out of nowhere, to scream his way through a song I didn't recognize.
After the show, we checked out the casino itself, which was a pretty ritzy place. Then we went home and watched Sick, which was...well, weird. We were thinking of going to Ocean City today, but we decided we'd go another day instead. So, yeah. That's pretty much everything for now.
