A Summer Wasting
Aug. 2nd, 2005 11:40 pmThanks to my ear infection, as well as general illness brought on by not eating anything for two whole days, I haven't really been keeping up with Internet stuff. Forgive me, my friends! I do intend to catch up in the future.
I watched Audition last night. I guess it was pretty good. I don't know. It was weird Japanese stuff. {g} I kept falling asleep throughout the beginning of the movie, but I stayed awake once it became more interesting. Incidentally, is there any reason why seemingly random English words show up in Japanese media and such? Are they things they don't have Japanese spellings for, or what?
Wow, it's already August. The summer is rushing by, and I don't know that I've really been taking advantage of it. I'm working less than I was last summer, but it seems like I've been doing less. Like we did in the past two years,
bethje and I bought season passes to Six Flags, but we've only gone there once, and didn't even get to stay very long. There's still plenty of time to go there, I guess, but we haven't been taking advantage of the passes like we did in the past. There's a good reason for that, though, and it's that every day when it isn't unbearably hot outside, it's raining. Neither one makes for good amusement park weather.
I don't know why, but I've been feeling kind of nostalgic as of late. I'm mostly just remembering stuff Beth and I did in the past. Not even necessarily in the summer. I guess I just get like that sometimes.
On a totally unrelated note, one of the news stories on AOL today says, "President Bush said Monday he believes schools should discuss 'intelligent design' alongside evolution when teaching students about the creation of life." No surprise there. I do have to wonder about the choice of words in that sentence, though. What does evolution have to do with "the creation of life"? Granted, there are theories that life evolved from non-living matter, so it's not totally inaccurate to associate the two, but it's hardly the main concern of evolutionary biology, and it's certainly not something I recall discussing much (if at all) in school. So it's a misleading sentence, and I don't know whether the blame for this should fall on AOL or the President. (Since I don't much care for either one, maybe I should just go ahead and blame both. {g}) There was also a poll, asking whether "intelligent design" should be taught in schools. Once again, I'd say that's misleading, because it doesn't specifically say "in science classes." It's fine if schools want to discuss religious concepts, but they should be taught in Religious Studies classes. Call me crazy, but I tend to think that science classes should stick to, well, science.
Finally, I noticed yesterday that some of the pages of my Oz-Story No. 6 (the one with the complete text of The Rundelstone of Oz in it) have come loose. I guess the binding was weak, or something. I've had it for five years now, though, and it's only recently that this happened.
