There's not all that much to talk about the earlier part of this week, aside from the fact that my sleep schedule has been really weird. I've had things to do in the mornings, and then would often just go back to bed. On Tuesday, [livejournal.com profile] bethje and I had to run some errands in Manhattan, then went to a diner called Big Daddy's. It was rather pricy (not too surprising, considering the location), but good. Beth had a cheeseburger, and I had two hot dogs with bacon and cheese. The place was decorated in a retro style, focusing on pop culture from previous decades.

On Friday, we met our friend Stephanie at the New York Transit Museum, which is small but interesting. Beth has a particular interest in the subway system, so it was right up her subterranean alley.

You enter through what looks like a subway entrance, and exhibits inside included models of old trains and turnstiles, and information on the construction of the routes. As with most tales of construction, many of them boiled down to low-wage workers giving their lives so people could travel more conveniently. I'm not religious, but it almost seems like we should pay them some kind of homage when entering the subway.

The sample trains included advertisements from the era, as well as a Pogo cartoon about the subway.

Souvenirs in the gift shop included nail polish in the colors of the subway lines, although I can't say I'm aware of any light blue T train. Apparently this designation was used for a line that was discontinued in 1967, but is scheduled to be used again late next year.

Beth bought a T-shirt, and I tried on but did not buy an engineer's cap.

Today was, of course, Independence Day, and I made a few Tumblr and WordPress posts related to the holiday. Aside from that, our only real acknowledgement of the day was when Beth and I went to the Coney Island Boardwalk to see the fireworks. They have a lot of fireworks there, so it's not like these were particularly special, but fireworks and the Fourth of July just kind of go together. It's difficult for me to take pictures of fireworks, but I did get a few.

After the display, I waited in line for way too long to get an overpriced hot dog at Nathan's. It was good, but I think I mostly just did it so I could say I did, so now I am.
