I got these two surveys from
countblastula.
Instructions: Comment to this post, and I will list five things I associate with you. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your LJ (or just add a reply back to me). Other people (including me) can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.
Khoi said he couldn't think of anything for me that I hadn't already written about, so he just went with ten-letter words instead.
flugelhorn - Can't you hear the flugelhorn? Can't you hear the bell? Even you can be reformed, you naughty ne'er-do-well.
cryptogram - I wish I could create these, but I don't know how not to make them too hard. Also, there's apparently a book called The Magic Cryptogram of Oz that my completist tendencies make me want to read, but I have no idea if it's ever been made available to the public.
nudibranch - Is that like a nudie bar? Oh, it's a snail? That's cool, I guess.
quickthorn - Sounds like an elf, but it's actually the same as hawthorn.
mythologer - My WordPress would be in a pretty sorry state without them.
1. Favourite childhood book?
When I first started reading, Winnie-the-Pooh. Later, the Alice books, and then the Oz series.
2. What are you reading right now?
I just finished Angelo Rappoport's Ancient Israel: Myths and Legends, and I'm almost done with Robert Rankin's They Came and Ate Us. I still have about 400 pages of Les Miserables left, and I intend to start on Rick Riordan's The Son of Neptune soon.
3. What books do you have on request at the library?
Nothing right now. There's too much readily available that I want to read.
4. Bad book habit?
Leaving books in my backpack for long periods of time, which isn't good for the paperbacks.
5. What do you currently have checked out at the library?
Just Ancient Israel, which I plan to return soon.
6. Do you have an e-reader?
Nope.
7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?
Several. I typically have three I'm working on at any given time.
8. Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog?
I wouldn't say so, but I do sometimes find myself thinking what would be interesting aspects of a book to blog about.
9. Least favourite book you read this year (so far?)
I don't know. Maybe A Wizard Alone, but that was still pretty good.
10. Favourite book you’ve read this year?
Hard to say, but I did quite like How to Read the Bible.
11. How often do you read out of your comfort zone?
You mean physically, or reading stuff I don't normally read?
12. What is your reading comfort zone?
If the former, in a quiet place. If the latter, fantasy, humor, and mythology.
13. Can you read on the bus?
Yes.
14. Favourite place to read?
In bed.
15. What is your policy on book lending?
I'm generally okay with it, but I can see why you might be wary at times.
16. Do you ever dog-ear books?
No.
17. Do you ever write in the margins of your books?
No.
18. Not even with text books?
No.
19. What is your favourite language to read in?
English. I'm lame that way.
20. What makes you love a book?
All the typical things, but I also like a book that contains memorable quotes.
21. What will inspire you to recommend a book?
I'm not usually one for direct recommendation. I'll generally just write about what I think of a book. If that inspires someone else to read it, all the better.
22. Favourite genre?
I guess I'd say fantasy.
23. Genre you rarely read (but wish you did?)
I don't read as much about history as I probably should.
24. Favourite biography?
I don't have an answer ready for this one.
25. Have you ever read a self-help book?
Not that I can recall.
26. Favourite cookbook?
The Anarchist's Cookbook. (Okay, I've never actually read that.)
27. Most inspirational book you’ve read this year (fiction or non-fiction)?
I'd say Lamb definitely had an effect on me.
28. Favourite reading snack?
While I'll admit to sometimes reading while I'm eating, there's no one particular food I associate with reading.
29. Name a case in which hype ruined your reading experience.
There have been books I didn't think lived up to the hype, but I can't think of any case when the hype actually ruined a book for me.
30. How often do you agree with critics about a book?
I wouldn't know, especially considering that different critics can have different opinions on the same book. Funny how that works out.
31. How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?
I'm fine with it unless I think the author will see it (which is sometimes the case with Oz books), in which case I have some more qualms. That said, I tend to be pretty positive about most of what I read.
32. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you chose?
I don't know. Ancient Greek?
33. Most intimidating book you’ve ever read?
Probably a textbook. I do remember trying to read the first few pages of Moby-Dick and finding it intimidating, but I wouldn't say it was the MOST intimidating.
34. Most intimidating book you’re too nervous to begin?
I can't think of a good example here.
35. Favourite Poet?
I'm not much of a poetry person. I do like T.S. Eliot pretty well, though.
36. How many books do you usually have checked out of the library at any given time?
I try to limit it to three, but there have been times I've had more.
37. How often have you returned books to the library unread?
If I've ever done that, it hasn't been recent. I don't even like returning them unfinished, although that has happened before.
