Since I've been writing a bit recently about musicians I don't like, I might as well get around to Katy Perry, seeing as how she was on American Idol this week and all. After a failed attempt to break into Christian rock (and considering what contemporary Christian music is successful, you have to wonder how anyone could possibly fail at it), she moved into regular pop, with hits like "Ur So Gay" and "I Kissed a Girl" (not to be confused with Jill Sobule's earlier song of the same name), the latter being an anthem for straight girls who pretend to be lesbians to get men excited. What I'm not sure about is whether she's actually singing all this seriously, or if she's secretly a brilliant satirist. Or maybe she's like Larry the Cable Guy, who doesn't actually believe what he says, but has a lot of fans who do. It can be difficult to tell in our complicated world.

As of late, the Katy Perry song that seems to get the most radio play is "Hot N Cold," which is mostly a list of opposites ("You're hot then you're cold, you're yes then you're no, earthly then you're extraterrestrial, you're Sunni then you're Shiite"). I figure she must be gunning for an appearance on Sesame Street. Hey, it worked for Feist with "1234." But even better is how the song begins. "You change your mind like a girl changes clothes." Because girls change their clothes a lot, am I right? Seriously, that's a simile bad enough to challenge Fergie's "I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket." Katy continues with, "You PMS like a girl I would know." So you DON'T know her, but you WOULD? That's a really convoluted line. These lines are just bad, but COMICALLY bad. They're up there with Neil Diamond's chair refusing to answer him. So once again, is she serious, or did she purposely set out to write bad lyrics?

I've seen some people say that they think Katy is a shitty musician, but she's still hot. I guess I can say I kind of like her fashion sense. Anyone who's looked at my Tumblr is aware of my weakness for the vintage pin-up look. I just wish those outfits were on a better-looking woman. {g}

No, really, she's not bad-looking, but her face just looks kind of sour. People point out how much she looks like Zooey Deschanel, whom I do find very attractive, and...yeah, they're similar in appearance, but Zooey looks a lot nicer. Of course, I have no idea what they're like in their day-to-day life. Maybe Zooey is actually a bitch and Katy is really sweet; I wouldn't know. But that's not how they come across in public appearances.
