1. Go into the archives of your LJ.
2. Find your 42nd entry ever. Yes, this may require some counting and basic math. Deal with it.
3. Link to that entry in a new entry. This is the meaning of your life.

Here it is.

Hmm...The Sims and Oz stories. Yes, I think that might actually BE the meaning of my life. {g} Not to mention that I'm writing about pretty much exactly the same things now. My journal is an island of constancy in a sea of change.

It's been a long time since I've really done anything for the Fourth of July. I think the last time I saw fireworks (by which I mean actually sitting around and watching them, not just noticing them from afar) was three years ago. There were thunderstorms in my area anyway. I did have two hot dogs and a hamburger at [livejournal.com profile] bethje's house, and the two of us later watched the rest of the Simpsons Season 9 DVD set. The commentary was pretty interesting, although the staff had their typical habit of repeating the same stories multiple times. I guess it can be difficult to remember when you're recording so many of those tracks.

Season 9 was when Mike Scully took over as show runner, and I know a lot of Internet fans, especially, consider his tenure to be the worst years of the show. The blame doesn't lie entirely on his shoulders, of course, but I do think the program improved somewhat when Al Jean took back the reins. I've noticed that the writers tend to be defensive of widely disliked episodes ("The Principal and the Pauper" being a prime example), so I can only imagine what they'll say about some of the really weak ones in the next few seasons.

I did think getting a day off from work in the middle of the week was nice, since it means I only have to work in two-day blocks. I know my mom said she preferred getting days off in the middle of the week. Personally, I prefer long weekends, but there's a certain appeal to not having to work that many days in a row.

My 42nd

The meaning of my life is that the fates conspire against my ability to ever get a job. There it is. It really is fate.

Yes. I can totally sit though an episode now. Am I wrong, but does Al Jean not overabuse the celebrity voice cameos? I know like in 2000-2004/5 I stopped watching Simpsons because it turned into "how many guest voices can we stick in tonight's show?"

I'm actually considering getting the DVDs of the Really Dire Seasons just to see how they explain themselves. Like, fuckin'... Saddlesore Galactica? Jesus.

I'm not really sure whether there are fewer celebrity voices now, but it does seem like there might be fewer episodes built around them.

I'm sure Beth and I will end up getting every full-season DVD set they put out. But really, based on their commentaries on other episodes I didn't like, probably the best we can hope for is something like, "The Internet fans don't like this one, but we think it's great!" with no real explanation as to why. I noticed that Matt Groening mentioned in the Season 9 introduction that "The Principal and the Pauper" was one of his least favorites, yet he didn't appear at all on the actual commentary for that episode. He wasn't there for "A Star Is Burns," either, which kind of makes it seem like he's purposely bowing out of the discussion when he has something negative to say. I don't think there's been a single Simpsons commentary where someone came right out and said, "This one isn't so great."
