The Do-Nothing Weekend
Jun. 24th, 2007 09:28 amBoth the Honors College reunion and the company picnic for my job are this weekend, and I'm not going to either. After a week of working, all I usually want to do on the weekends is sit around on the computer and watch movies and stuff with
bethje. I think I kind of tired myself out by going to a concert every weekend in May. Actually, I'd probably go out a little more if I didn't work nights, but even that would probably just mean going shopping occasionally. I guess it's good that I can find amusement without a lot of external assistance, but it probably doesn't make for very interesting reading.
I do wish I could get more accomplished on the computer, though. I started work on a new Oz story, and I already have it pretty well mapped out, but none of my attempts to actually write the thing have gotten very far. Why can't I stick to things that I've started?
A few of my fellow International Wizard of Oz Club members have reported receiving the latest Baum Bugle, but I still haven't gotten mine. Maybe I'll get it on Monday, but I wouldn't count on it. Waiting for mail always brings so much disappointment, but a great sense of satisfaction when it actually arrives.
And since I promised (well, not exactly "promised," but "indicated," anyway) that I would reveal the answers to my latest lyrics quiz. So here you go:
1. Please don't ask me how I am. I'd have to lie and say I'm fine. - "I'll Be Okay," by the Fastbacks
2. My daughter needs a new phonograph, she wore out all the needles. - "Pop Hates The Beatles," by Allan Sherman.
arfies recognized the song, although she didn't get the actual title or artist.
3. To my dear, dear mother, I leave my only shoes. - "Xylophone Track," by the Magnetic Fields
4. She said, "I think there's something wrong with making out to the tunes of a Daniel Johnston song." - "Robert Wilson," by Muckafurgason, who have shown up on several of my lyric guessing games, but never (to the best of my knowledge, anyway) been correctly identified.
5. Maybe I'm a witch, lost in time, running through the fields of Scotland by your side. - "Etienne," by Tori Amos, from Y Kant Tori Read. About the only person I thought would possibly get it was
colleenanne, and she didn't. I wouldn't have been able to get it either.
6. [Title], I don't know your real name, but I love you just the same. - "Dear Red," by the Young Fresh Fellows
7. If I was the [title], I'd echo everything you say. - "Grand Canyon," by the Magnetic Fields.
travspence got it.
8. Well, she crept back in the house at half past three, shook her head to see him snoring in his sleep. - "The Last Polka," by Ben Folds Five.
colleenanne got it.
9. Oh, my beloved [title], how I long to see your face photographed in fifteen-second intervals in a bank in San Leandro. - Come on, nobody got this? Even after all those mix tapes I put it on back in the day? It's "Tania," by Camper Van Beethoven.
10. I never went to the tropical island, though everybody says they saw me there. - "Weep Day," by They Might Be Giants.
revme and
rockinlibrarian both got it, and some anonymous person who refused to identify him/herself obviously knew the song but used the wrong title.
11. The jungle was giving a party, a post-hibernation ball. - "The Warthog," by Flanders and Swann
12. Just before we got up here, all the guys were having a fight. - TMBG's Minneapolis/First Avenue Stage Venue Song. Am I the only one who actually listened to the Venue Songs? Even TMBG fans seem to always miss these when they come up.
13. At the [title], you stare right at the ocean, mountains at your back you think you've tamed. - "End Of Miles," by Frank Black and the Catholics. Coincidentally, I am listening to this song right now.
14. I don't want to change your mind. I don't want to think about your mind. - "Narrow Your Eyes," by TMBG.
jenhime,
revme, and the anonymous TMBG fan all got it.
15. [Title] when they say that you're mistaken thinking hopes and dreams that aren't there? - "Is It Wicked Not To Care?", by Belle and Sebastian
16. Hey, hey, remember me? Oh yeah, we've met before. I used to know the drummer who's not with you anymore. - "Edmonton," by Carolyn Mark and the Room-Mates
17. Having ended all life and absorbed all other robots, ruler of the cosmos, she walks into the sunset. - "The Lonely Robot," by Future Bible Heroes
18. Actually I was never conceived, and I don't expect to be believed, but I've found my mouth stitched up with glossy pink thread. - "Our Lies," by Rasputina
19. What is there to say? Still I can't be silent. Hear [title], and you'll be enlightened. - "The Cult Of Ray," by Frank Black
20. Two big babies met on a winter's day. They thought they'd get all dressed up to play. - "Crybabies," by Rasputina
21. About a maid I'll sing a song, sing rickity-tickity-tin. About a maid I'll a sing a song, who didn't have her family long. - "The Irish Ballad," by Tom Lehrer.
revme and
arfies got it, and
jenhime inadvertantly gave what's basically the correct title.
22. You're one groovy gypsy man. I did this abandoned car. I slip off my flip-flops and walk past the crash pad, and step on some broken glass. - "Chaos By Design," by TMBG, credited to "Colorwheel" as part of their Battle of the Bands project. If you don't know this song, you should, because it's awesome.
23. [Title] is where I hang. [Title] is where I am again, and don't try hard to get down or move to better company there. - "On The Wall," by the Fastbacks
24. There's a sale on our gabardine suits today. They're all 30% off from yesterday. - "King Of Suede," "Weird Al" Yankovic's parody of the Police's "King Of Pain."
travspence got it.
25. We're caught in a trap. I can't walk out, because I love you too much, baby. - "Suspicious Minds," by Elvis Presley. Pretty much everyone who participated got this one.
26. Now, somewhere in the black mining hills of Dakota, there lived a young boy named [title]. - "Rocky Raccoon," by the Beatles. Not surprisingly,
rockinlibrarian and
arfies both got it.
27. Laying on the [title], my heart, it flares like fire. - "Grass," by XTC. Well, actually, the track that came up was by a band called Maplewood for the Losers' Lounge tribute to XTC, but nobody had any way of knowing that.
jenhime and
revme got it.
28. I met someone at the dog show. - "She's An Angel," by TMBG.
colleenanne,
revme, and the anonymous poster got it.
rockinlibrarian also recognized the song, but didn't know the actual title.
29. Good morning lethargy. Drink Pepsi, it's good for energy. - "Look Inside America," by Blur
30. It's such a dreamlike view from the ceiling where every feeling is part of the fall. - "Centre For Holy Wars," by the New Pornographers. I've mentioned several times how I can never learn the lyrics to their songs, so I'm not surprised that no one got it.
If I were keeping score,
revme would be the winner, with seven right answers. But since I'm not giving out any prizes or anything, does it really matter?
