Okay, why are the New Pornographers being used to advertise the University of Phoenix?

You know, when I first started working the midnight shift, my plan was to go to bed right after getting home from work. I still do that sometimes, but often, I find I don't want to sleep immediately after getting back, so I spend time on the Internet or playing The Sims 2 instead. And that's not a huge problem or anything, but it might be nice to get back on a regular sleeping schedule. Oh, well.

Hmm...this Leonetti's frozen stromboli is pretty good, but I've had better. I certainly like it more than the sausage-intensive kind that they sell over by the deli counter at the local Shop-Rite. I really prefer it when stromboli has tomato sauce inside, though. It's always a little annoying when a pizza place will give you the sauce on the side instead.

And here's a cool book survey that I got from [livejournal.com profile] rockinlibrarian:

Hardback or trade paperback or mass market paperback? Well, I prefer hardbacks overall, but since they usually cost more, I tend to get more books in paperback.

Amazon or brick and mortar? Amazon has a better selection and is generally cheaper, but it doesn't really compare to browsing in a physical store. I guess it really depends on what I'm looking for.

Barnes & Noble or Borders? I like Borders better overall; they often seem to have a better selection and lower prices. I'd say B&N looks a little classier, though.

Bookmark or dogear? I never dogear; it's just not possible to get rid of that crease afterwards. I'll usually use whatever piece of paper I have at hand as a bookmark, or else just stop reading at the end of a chapter so I don't really NEED to mark my place.

Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random? By author, generally. Some of my books are loosely arranged by subject, but I don't think that works so well for a personal collection that doesn't really contain that many subjects, so I might well just scrap that and make them all alphabetical.

Keep, throw away, or sell? I tend to keep everything, although I HAVE sold some of my old textbooks. I took an enormous loss on them, of course, but it's not like I was ever going to use them again.

Keep dust jacket or toss it? Again, I tend to keep everything.

Read with dust jacket or remove it? I usually mean to remove them, and then forget. There are some dust jackets that I've totally messed up by NOT removing them. I'm much more careful with my books now than I have been in the past, though.

Short story or novel? Novel. I've never been much of a short story reader, really.

Collection (short stories by same author) or anthology (short stories by
different authors)? Depends on the author(s) involved, I suppose.

Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket? I'm a fan of both. I might have to vote for Harry as the overall winner, as there's just so much more to those books. But I think Lemony Snicket/Daniel Handler writes in a more memorable style. It's the difference between a good author and a good writer, perhaps (not that both Rowling and Handler don't fall into both categories, but I rarely remember any non-dialogue passages from Rowling's books).

Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks? It depends on HOW tired I am. I'll try to read to a chapter break or somewhere else convenient (with Discworld books, since they rarely HAVE chapters, I'll read until I get to a blank space between paragraphs), but there have been plenty of times when I just couldn't stay awake long enough for that, or I ran out of time.

It was a dark and stormy night? or Once upon a time? I'd have to say the former, if only because people who use it generally do so ironically.

Buy or Borrow? I like to borrow when I can, since it saves money. If I really like a book, though, I certainly prefer to own it. And I have completist tendencies, which means that I often like to own all of the books in a particular series, or by a particular author.

New or used? New for the most part, but it can be a lot of fun to look around used bookstores. Occasionally you can find a real bargain, too.

Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation or browse? The first two, mostly. It's rare that I'll buy anything just because I come across it and it looks cool. But then, if it isn't something I'm already pretty sure I'll like, I'll usually borrow it rather than buying it right away.

Tidy ending or cliffhanger? Either one can work. I guess I like there to be SOME sort of wrap-up, but with some ends left untied.

Morning reading, afternoon reading or nighttime reading? I'm fine with any of them. I guess I do most of my reading at night, but it can also be really nice to read outside during the day. I haven't done that quite as much since leaving college.

Stand-alone or series? I definitely tend to be a series person, but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of non-series books that I've enjoyed.

Favorite series? I think just about anyone who's read my journal, or looked at my web page, or known me for any length of time knows the answer to this. But for the benefit of anyone who might have come across this entry randomly, it's the Oz series.

Favorite children's book? See the last answer. If I had to pick a specific volume, I'd probably say The Patchwork Girl of Oz. I also have to say that I rate Through the Looking-Glass quite highly, and I'd read that severl times long before getting into Oz.

Favorite book of which nobody else has heard? I think I could name just about any post-Baum Oz book here, couldn't I? For that matter, even some of the Baum books could probably qualify. I'd like to be able to come up with a non-Oz answer, but I can't offhand, so I'll say Phyllis Ann Karr's The Gardener's Boy of Oz.

Favorite books read last year? Let's see. Terry Pratchett's Wintersmith, Lemony Snicket's The End, and James Loewen's Lies Across America were all noteworthy. I also quite liked March Laumer's The Good Witch of Oz and The Umbrellas of Oz.

Favorite books of all time? The Oz books, Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books, pretty much anything Discworld, Lewis Carroll's Alice books, the Chronicles of Narnia...I'm sure I could think of more if I wanted to.

Least favorite book you finished last year? I don't think I read anything particularly bad last year, but some of March Laumer's Oz books weren't anywhere near the level of Good Witch or Umbrellas.

What are you reading right now? Double Wonderful, by John Swartzwelder

What are you reading next? I don't know. I'll probably be re-reading whatever we choose to discuss next on the Regalia e-mail list (possibly Melody Grandy's excellent Seven Blue Mountains of Oz trilogy), but I haven't yet decided what I'll want to read for the first time. I have a lot of options.
