The new Weird Al album, Straight Outta Lynwood, comes out tomorrow. For those of you who (like me) don't listen to the radio much, or if you just want a refresher, here are his parody targets this time around:

Chamillionaire - Ridin' - I'm not sure I'd even heard of Chamillionaire before news that he was going to be parodied came around, but this song is presumably pretty big (I guess Al wouldn't have made it his lead parody target otherwise). Al's own version of the video is up at his MySpace page.
Green Day - American Idiot - Okay, you probably know this one even if you don't know the others.
Usher - Confessions Part II
Taylor Hicks - Do I Make You Proud? - No actual video at this link, just a changing series of pictures. I'm not sure there even IS a real promotional video for the song, and I don't think it's been played on the radio much either (although, as I've admitted, I don't really listen to the radio that much, so I suppose I wouldn't know for sure). My guess is that, after Atlantic Records denied Al permission to include "You're Pitiful" on the album, he decided he'd just go ahead and parody the American Idol winner.
R. Kelly - Trapped In The Closet - Okay, let's all ask the obvious question together. Ready? "Does this really NEED a parody?" Thank you. Still, knowing Al's skill with rambling story songs, I have pretty high hopes for "Trapped In The Drive-Thru." Don't disappoint me, Al! {g}

Incidentally, I think exposing my brain to "Trapped In The Closet" was damaging to my subconscious, because I had a dream that I saw R. Kelly in concert (WTF?), and he performed all twelve parts. The only other thing I remember about the dream is that [livejournal.com profile] 3x1minus1 was also at the concert, presumably because I'm pretty sure it was on her journal that I first heard of Mr. Kelly's saga. My mind might have also been somewhat influenced by the fact that, when I saw the Decemberists last year, they started out with "The Tain," their own multi-part epic (although it's nowhere near as long as "Closet").

[livejournal.com profile] obsessical did a whole lot of surveys this past weekend, and I appropriated a few of them for my own purposes.

Is your hair up? - Up where?
Is your phone right beside you? - The house phone is to my right, and my cell phone on a table nearby.
Do you wish you were somewhere else? - Not really, but I'm probably going out soon anyway.
Do you have plans for tonight? - Yeah, I'm going out to the mall with [livejournal.com profile] bethje and Dorothea. Unfortunately, Chick-fil-A isn't open today.
Are you wearing clothes? - Yes, I don't usually use the computer in the nude.
Are you wearing chapstick? - Yes
Are you cold? - A little. Dorothea always puts the fans and air conditioning on when it isn't even that hot.
Are you tired? - A little.
Are you excited? - Not particularly
Are you watching t.v.? - No
Are you wearing pajamas? - No
Who's the last person you im'ed? - Beth
Who's the last person that called you? - Probably also Beth, but I can't remember for sure

Past-

Anything you regret? - Come on, would ANYONE answer no to this?
Ever lied? - Yeah, but not that often.
Ever stuck gum under a desk: No. That's gross.
Ever spit at someone? - Not intentionally
Ever kick something living? - Not as far as I can recall, unless Tae Kwon Do class counts.
Ever had your nails done? - No
Ever thrown up because you cried so hard? - No

Last week-

Had any plans last week? - Nothing significant
Who did you see most last week? - Beth
Was last week interesting? - Not especially, although some fairly significant things happened.

Today-

Have you yelled at someone? - No
Have you gotten mad at someone? - No
Have you cried? - No.
Have you called more than 3 people? - No, I haven't called any.
Have you IMed more than 3 people? - Again, I haven't IMed anyone.
Have you eaten anything gross? - No. All I've had was a banana and a cinnamon roll, and they were both good.

THE WHO'S

Who is in the room with you?: Nobody

Who was the last person to text you?: Beth

Who was the last person you made plans with?: Beth

Whose house did you last go to?: Beth's (again)

Who's your favorite relative?: You're not supposed to choose favorites among your relatives, are you?

What was the last thing you drank?: Sprite from Subway

What color pants are you wearing?: Black

What is the closest item near you that is blue?: My writing journal from January 1986

What are you wearing on your feet?: Black socks

What instant messaging service do you use?: AIM

What is your most used away message?: Probably the default one, but I don't really use away messages that often. I'll usually just shut down AIM when I leave the computer.

What is your favorite shoe brand?: Well, I wear Lands' End shoes most often, but I don't know that I'd say they're necessarily my favorite brand. I don't really have one.

What do you wear more, jeans or skirts?: I pretty much never wear jeans, but I've never worn a skirt at all, so I guess that answers that question.

What do you currently hear?: The same song I was hearing the last time I was asked about this.

When did you last go to the mall?: Yesterday (since it's now the day after I talked about having plans to go there).

When did you last buy a new pair of Shorts?: I'm not sure I ever have. I stopped wearing shorts years and years ago, and my dad probably bought my last pair for me.

Where is your phone: I think my cell phone is downstairs.

Where is your mom?: Probably at her house

Where do you sleep?: In a bed

Where did you get the shirt you're wearing: I think my mom gave it to me some time ago. It's now a little tight around the neck, as are a lot of my shirts.

Where did you last take a car ride to?: As opposed to a drive? I guess it was when Beth and I went out to eat with Alyssa a few nights ago.

My next post will probably include my comments on last night's Simpsons, American Dad, and Futurama episodes. For now, though, I might as well just go ahead and post this.

*snerk*

White & Nerdy is an awesome song. Al's rapping is so much better than most professional rap artists. Also, Seth Green and... is that Donny Osmond? in the video. I dislike those songs he's parodying on the album, though. It's going to take a lot for me to love those tracks. I usually quite like the original tracks Al parodies, with some exceptions.

I think I'll steal that middle survey.

It sounds like it could be a funny album. And that's pretty funny about all the R. Kelly stuff. "Trapped in the Closet" is painfully stupid, but you know that.

From the lyrics to Canadian Idiot, it looks like Al references Barenaked Ladies and Moxy Fruvous in the same breath.

I also for some reason really enjoyed the secret for the moon. I even copied-it-in-the-thought-of-pasting-it to say so, but since [livejournal.com profile] lozenger8 just did, I'll refrain. And just mention it instead.

Yeah, it's Donny Osmond dancing in the background. This page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_%26_Nerdy) has a list of all the references in the video. There are some really funny freeze-frame gags.

I dislike those songs he's parodying on the album, though.

Yeah, the only one I'd really say I particularly like is the Green Day song, although "Trapped In The Closet" does have that so-bad-it's-good quality to it. "Ridin'" isn't THAT bad, and I guess it's kind of catchy, but it's nothing to write home about either. The Usher and Taylor Hicks songs are just boring, though. Even if the jokes are good, it'll take some work to get past the tunes. But then, the James Blunt song that was supposed to be parodied on the album is also lousy, and I still like Al's version pretty well. So I'm not giving up hope, but I do wish he hadn't gone so much into R&B territory this time around. That's a genre I can't really get into, for the most part.

There's a Magnetic Fields song called "Save A Secret For The Moon," which is what I was actually referencing.

I've never seen Robot Chicken, but I understand the creator did an animated video of the song "Weasel Stomping Day," which will be on the album.

Hmm, looking at the lyrics page I found through Google, I can't find any specific references to either band. I'm pretty sure Al is a fan of both, though. BNL appeared on The Weird Al Show, and Al once did a gig with Früvous.

I don't really want to look at too many of the lyrics before actually hearing the songs. I think I ruined some of the jokes on Poodle Hat by reading the lyrics first.

Maybe I'll check that out. Thanks!

Immediately after mentioning Celine Dion, the lyrics list the following two lines:

eat their weight in kraft macaroni
and dream of driving a zamboni

Maybe I'm just too obscure in my references, but that immediately made me think of "If I Had a Million Dollars" and "King of Spain." Again, I might be reading too much into it, but two lines that reference key parts of the songs of Canadian bands that Al's fans would know about, right after referring to a Canadian singer just seemed right to me.

I figured those were the lines you were thinking of, but they seem to me to be too generic to be specific references. If I'd known of a BNL or Früvous song that rhymed "macaroni" with "zamboni," or the rhyme had been "zamboni" with "phone me," I'd be more likely to think it was intentional (just like I see no way Al couldn't have been thinking of Adam Sandler's Chanukah Song when rhyming "Chanukah" with "yarmulke," even though those are also pretty generic Jewish references). Who knows, though? Is eating a lot of Kraft Dinner (as they call it) a common Canadian stereotype?

Date: 2006-09-26 01:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] onib.livejournal.com
That's why th ereference popped into my head. I'd never heard of any kind of Canadian stereotype which involved eating lots of Kraft Dinner - just that one song.

You don't see it as much any more, but before they got big for "One Week" and some of the more current songs, every time I went to a BNL show, they always had bins when you went into the hall. Above them were large signs asking you to donate your boxes of Kraft to the homeless rather than throw them at the band. That seems to have started after some fan threw an entire box of Kraft at Ed rather than individual noodles.

From: [identity profile] vovat.livejournal.com
Hmm, maybe that's an intentional reference, then. I still think the Früvous reference is a bit of a stretch, though (even though Früvous DID sing backing vocals on "If I Had $1,000,000").

It was on the DVD side of the album, so I've seen it now. I like the way Al was animated in it.
