Beth and I went to the Coney Island Mermaid Parade today. I'd been twice before, in 2015 and 2017, but she never had. It was pretty fun, with a lot of interesting costumes. I have to say I'm sort of tempted to be in it, but I'm way too lazy and incompetent at making things to come up with anything. There was someone near us who kept playing with this toy horn that made siren sounds, so that was kind of annoying, but not that big of a deal. It generally seems to be less crowded than parades in Manhattan, or maybe it's just easier to find a spot. The last time I went, my phone battery died, and while I had a spare, I'd either forgotten to charge it or charged it and left it too long. I was going to bring my camera, which I've pretty much stopped using since I got a phone that took pictures with good resolution, but I can no longer get the battery compartment open. It worked out all right, although a lot of my pictures ended up being of people's backs, because I'm terrible at timing photographs.

After the parade, we walked over to Coney Island Creek, and on our way back we got chicken at Popeyes.

I don't think I've ever been there before. I'm not totally sure about that, but if I did it was well before they started doing the Louisiana Kitchen thing. It was pretty good. I think I like KFC better, but Popeyes might have better biscuits. We got the mild tenders, because white people can't handle hot food. Seriously, I've known plenty of white people for whom that's not true, but it definitely is for me. And someone in the parade was dressed as Popeye, so that was appropriate, I guess.

I also liked that they played Dixieland and zydeco music, at least at that particular location. It's on Mermaid Avenue, and like a lot of businesses, the ones there often use the street name in their names. That's fine, except I have to wonder what's up with a butcher shop called Mermaid Prime Meat.
