Although I have a general interest in comedic music, I don't think I'd heard of Flanders and Swann until around ten years ago, when someone on the Ozzy Digest pointed out the similarity between their Hippopotamus Song and the Middlings' national anthem from The Royal Book of Oz. I later checked out some of their songs, and found them to be catchy and amusing. Sure, some of their jokes don't hold up so well nowadays, but in a way that makes it more interesting. They remind me of Tom Lehrer (another musician who was popular on the Ozzy Digest), what with the humorous lyrics, complex rhymes, and piano accompaniment. I now have the "best of" collection that Amazon offers, and I've now added The Complete Flanders & Swann to my wishlist. I doubt I'll ever get it unless I buy it myself, though, just like those Allan Sherman and Stan Freberg box sets.
