Yesterday, I bought the new album by the Magnetic Fields. It's called Distortion, and I'd say that's an appropriate title. The somewhat distorted sound doesn't really work so well on songs like "California Girls," where the amusing lyrics aren't as easily discernible as they really should be. I mean, it's hardly one of those songs where you can't understand the words at all, but I think they should be in the forefront. Oh, well. Another interesting thing about this album is that, according to the liner notes, there were no synthesizers used in the music. As of my first few listens, my favorite song on the record is definitely "Too Drunk To Dream."

Speaking of albums by gay musicians, I listened to the Scissor Sisters' self-titled album and Ta-Dah! a few days ago. I thought they were pretty good, although I have to say it was the somewhat old-fashioned-sounding piano-driven songs like "I Can't Decide" and "Intermission" that really caught my attention more than the dance songs.

Okay, what else? Well, last night, [livejournal.com profile] bethje and I watched Hatchet. This was a recent horror movie that they previewed at the Monster-Mania Convention in Cherry Hill, and then didn't show at any theaters in the area. Not that that's the fault of the organizers of Monster-Mania, but still. The plot was pretty generic, but I did appreciate some of the references to earlier slasher films. Both Robert Englund and Tony Todd had bit parts, and there was a line that I thought was a callback to Dr. Loomis' "But I shot him six times!" from the Halloween series.

Finally, for your lesson of the day: You can't beat the Axis if you get VD (link from [livejournal.com profile] arfies).
