I went back to Pennsylvania for the first time in a while yesterday, so I could see Jenny Lewis live at the TLA. I got there pretty soon after doors opened, and got a seat on the balcony. The view wasn't particularly good, but I'm glad I didn't have to stand up through the whole thing. I DID stand through Jenny's set, but there were two openers and a lot of waiting before that. The openers were Michael Runion (your standard dude with a guitar) and Vietnam (a rock band with a lead singer who seemed to be doing a Bob Dylan impression). Neither one wowed me. Michael actually started his set very soon after doors, so I was hoping it would be an evening of promptness. No such luck, I'm afraid. After Vietnam, it was well over a half hour before the main act started.

Jenny was accompanied by the Watson Twins (who dressed alike, just as they do in the pictures I've seen of them) and four backup musicians. Their set was only about an hour long, which was enough time for them to do almost every song from Rabbit Fur Coat (I don't think they did "It Wasn't Me," and I know they didn't do the reprise of "Happy," but I wouldn't really say the latter counts anyway), as well as some other things. Songs I hadn't heard before included one called "Acid Tongue," and another one about matricide. They also did a cool cover of "I Met Him On A Sunday" (originally by the Shirelles, according to what I turned up on a Google search). Most of the songs sounded very much like their album equivalents, although "Run Devil Run" (the opening number) was extended, and Jenny sang of "Philadelphia streets" rather than Atlanta ones in "The Charging Sky." She was totally alone on stage while performing "Rabbit Fur Coat," and she and the Watsons changed to shinier dresses a few songs into the set. So it was cool, but too short. They DO only have the one one album, though, and artists who are just starting out with solo/side projects generally avoid doing songs from their more famous bands. How long was it before Frank Black started doing Pixies songs at solo shows, for instance? Of course, Frank is an incredibly prolific songwriter, to the point where he's probably written two songs in the time it's taken me to write this post, so I doubt it was ever any trouble for him to fill a set.

I got the last two Fuzzy Warbles volumes in the mail yesterday, but I still haven't gotten my hands on a copy of The Tragic Treasury. The computer at Borders said they had it, but I couldn't find it on the shelves, and it apparently cost $19 there anyway. I'll look a few other places, but it might end up having to be something I send away for.

EDIT: Oh, and I also found out that the Dresden Dolls will be at the TLA toward the end of this month. The annoying part is that I didn't notice the advertisements for the concert until AFTER last night's show, so I couldn't try buying tickets at the box office and avoiding the ridiculous Ticketmaster charges. I went ahead and got a ticket online after I got home, though. I figure it will be worth it regardless, since they're quite high on my list of Bands I Want To See Live.
