Was Mommy a monkey? I can't remember!
May. 15th, 2006 02:26 pmToday is the 150th anniversary of L. Frank Baum's birth. They're having some kind of special Oz thing at Books of Wonder this Thursday, but there's obviously no way I could make it there. I missed their Oz Day a few years ago, too. Oh, well.
Okay, let's see here. I guess last night's Simpsons was about what you'd expect from an episode with the evolution vs. Creationism premise, but I still liked it. A lot of the ridiculous anti-evolution arguments, especially the prosecutor with the deer, but also Charles Darwin making out with Satan in the video and a few other things, were quite amusing. Really, I think they were only slightly exaggerated beyond real Creationist arguments. And the basic conclusion (people can believe what they want, but religion shouldn't be taught in public schools) is the same way I feel about the whole thing, so that's cool. I got the impression that they were going for the both-sides-learn-something ending, with Lisa telling Ned that she respected his beliefs, but there wasn't that much focus on that.
Since Family Guy also did a Creationism joke, I have to wonder if it was intentional that these two were aired the same day. Anyway, it wasn't one of the better recent episodes, but it definitely had its moments, and was probably better overall than last week's. One joke I remember liking was how, in the segment where most of the other major characters were black, Cleveland was white. I also thought the bit with Hitler's brother was funny, even though the whole "famous historical figure with an annoying relative or friend" thing is kind of a comedy cliché by now. I can't think of any examples offhand, but I know I've seen it several times before.
Last night's American Dad was possibly the most bizarre episode I've seen, but also one of the best. I thought it was kind of weird that a show where Stan befriends George Clooney didn't address Clooney's politics, but then, maybe that just means that Stan's character has progressed beyond his simply being a caricature of a conservative, jingoistic idiot. I also liked the subplot with Roger forcing foster children into slavery in his vineyard. Incidentally, they never did actually say what kind of sickness Haley had, did they? I guess the fact that they kept bringing it up without really explaining it was the joke.

Oh, and my DVD-ROM drive has apparently stopped working. It still opens and closes, and the computer knows it's there, but it won't recognize any discs I put into it. Does anyone have any idea what I can do (aside from taking it to the shop, that is)?
