It's only a paper Mario
Jul. 11th, 2005 03:42 pmWell,
bethje surprised me by giving me one last anniversary present: a copy of Paper Mario. I'd been wanting to try that game for some time now, so it was a cool gift. I played it for a little while today, and managed to beat the Goomba King and reach Toad Town and Shooting Star Summit. The plot is pretty similar to that of the original Super Mario RPG, with wish-granting Star Spirits. I do have to wonder how anyone came up with the idea of paper characters. I seem to recall seeing the suggestion that it was partially done so they could do a three-dimensional game without having to render 3-D models for all the characters. It's kind of a weird concept, but the game has been fun so far. As with most Mario role-playing games, it uses a turn-based battle system, but with action commands for added attack and defense power. I always have some trouble with the action commands, but I usually get used to them after playing for a little while.
The game has its own map, which is a good thing, since I've always been quite fond of maps of fictional places. It's actually a pipe dream (Get it? Mario? Pipes? {g}) of mine to create a map of the Mushroom World that's basically consistent with all of the Mario games and related media, but I'm sure it would prove to be a difficult task. Consistency in locations isn't really a strong point of the Mario game designers.
Let's see. What else? Last night's Family Guy was pretty funny. I liked Stewie's rants, especially the one where he mentioned the "Mr. Plow" episode of The Simpsons. The show's writers do seem to be making a real effort to push the envelope this season. I mean, I guess they always have, but they seem to have been doing it even more as of late.
I don't know why, but it appears that it's been taking longer for Netflix to receive the movies we've sent back recently. It's pretty annoying, because it means we have to wait longer to get new ones.
