A few weeks ago, [livejournal.com profile] bethje got Requiem for a Dream and Pi in a package, and we finally watched the latter last night. While I'm not sure I got the point of the whole thing (something about how there are things people weren't meant to understand, perhaps?), I did like it. I enjoyed the mathematical theme, and how much they incorporated into it. There were references to the random order of the stock market, the golden ratio, and Kabbala (I'm pretty sure the film predates Madonna's interest in the latter by a few years). I'm not really that much of a math person, I guess, but I find a lot of that stuff interesting. I liked when Sol pointed out that, if you're looking for a certain number, you'll find it everywhere. That's why I consider numerology to be beyond even astrology in terms of how ridiculous and convenient it can get. I have to wonder whether the thing about the True Name of God being 216 characters long is based on anything real.

Heh, I just took a quick look at the IMDB entry for the movie, and someone mentioned that they saw it shelved under N at the video store, apparently because the shelvers didn't recognize the symbol for pi. (What, they never took grade school geometry?) There's also a message board thread with the title "Was this movie anti-semetic [sic]?". Ah, what would an IMDB thread be without stupid questions?

Okay, I need to go get my oil changed. My car's oil, that is. I don't personally use oil.
