I've been thinking somewhat about whether it's better for the United States to focus on foreign or domestic affairs. Now, I'm certainly no expert in this area, but, like any blogger worth his or her salt, I have opinions that I'm eager to share with the world (and by "the world," I mean "the ten to twenty people who actually read this"). I do think it's kind of ridiculous that Iraq, a country that posed no real threat to the United States, is apparently a higher priority to the American government than, y'know, our own country. Saddam Hussein was obviously a rotten guy who shouldn't have been in charge of a nation, but there are a lot of other such leaders throughout the world, and I don't see the United States deposing them. I suppose THEIR countries don't have huge oil deposits, though. The money-over-people attitude that American leaders seem to have really bugs me, but it's not the main thrust of what I'm getting at (in this entry, anyway). The thing is, I don't really like the imperialistic attitude of a lot of Americans. On the other hand, I really do think we should be aiming toward a government for the whole world. This is something that Bush and his cronies seem to be actively working against. I know the United Nations has its problems, but rather than trying to work out these problems, it really does seem like Bush is just defying them whenever possible. His opinion on the International Criminal Court was basically "Americans are above being prosecuted for crimes in other countries!", which is really pretty sick. Why should Americans be able to bully everyone else, and never receive any retribution for it? I don't think the UN as it stands today is necessarily ever going to rise to any real power, but I do think a governing body for the entire world should be the ultimate goal. That said, everybody knows the world is a diverse place. Should the same standards apply everywhere? Probably not. That's why I think the ideal governmental system would be to have a lot of local governing bodies to deal with most of the day-to-day issues, and a representative world assembly to settle disputes and make sure the local leaders are behaving themselves. I don't think this is anything that we're going to reach anytime soon. Perhaps it'll never happen. I think it should be something to strive toward, though, and the Bush administration really isn't doing anything of the sort. Instead, they're operating under the "America can do anything they want! Screw everybody else!" philosophy, which I'm sure is pissing off the rest of the world.
