Okay, here's another survey.

List 10 musical artists that you like. (Do this before reading the other questions.)

1. They Might Be Giants
2. XTC
3. Frank Black
4. Camper Van Beethoven
5. The Young Fresh Fellows
6. "Weird Al" Yankovic
7. Tori Amos
8. Neko Case
9. Laura Cantrell
10. Hypnotic Clambake

1) What was the first song you ever heard by #6?

I think it was "Eat It," on some Disney special

2) What is your favorite album of #8?

Furnace Room Lullaby

3) What is your favorite lyric that #5 has sung?

I went to mass each morning
Each night I drowned in gin
I wanted to be close to God
But not at the expense of sin
Because sin is such a comfort
And the Lord can be so rough
Well, I guess just one religion's enough

4) How many times have you seen #4 live?

Twice, plus David Lowery did some CVB songs when I saw him do an acoustic show with Johnny Hickman.

5) What's your favorite song of #7?

Probably "Black Dove (January)"

6) What is a good memory you have considering the music of #10?

When I saw them in concert in Indiana, Pennsylvania. It was a lot of fun. There were a lot of smelly hippies there. (Okay, I didn't actually notice any odor, but there WERE hippies.)

7) Is there a song of #3 that makes you sad?

Not really, but some of his recent stuff is pretty melancholy.

8) What is your favorite lyric that #2 has sung?

Pretty much all of "Summer's Cauldron." Here's a sample:

"When Miss Moon lays down
And Sir Sun stands up
Me, I'm found floating 'round and 'round
Like a bug in brandy in this big bronze cup
Drowning here in summer's cauldron"

I wish I could drown in summer's cauldron right now. Lousy cold weather.

9) What is your favorite song by #9?

All The Same To You

10) How did you get into #3?

By way of #1, mostly. I knew there was a lot of crossover between TMBG and Frank fans, and I found a used copy of Teenager of the Year, and decided to take a chance on it. I'd heard a little of his music before that, but not much. It took a little while for the album to grow on me, but eventually it became one of my overall favorite albums. Incidentally, I knew Frank before I'd really heard anything by the Pixies, which is a definite rarity.

11) What is your favorite song by #4?

Maybe "She Divines Water," but it's a tough call.

12) How many time have you seen #9 live?

Once

13) What is a good memory you have concerning #2?

A lot of my memories of XTC involve being in summer classes at college, when I started accumulating their albums, and listening to them quite frequently. Skylarking was a great summer album.

14) Is there a song of #8 that makes you sad?

Nothing makes me break out in tears, but there's a lot of emotion in her songs.

15) What is your favorite lyric that #3 has sung?

It's a Pixies song rather than a solo one, but I think "Velouria" remains his lyrical triumph.

"Say to me, where have you been?
Finally through the roof
And how does lemur's skin reflect the sea?
We will wade in the shine of the ever
We will wade in the tides of the summer"

I guess I have a particular fondness for summer-related songs.

16) What is your favorite song of #1?

It's Not My Birthday

That was fun. I like to talk about how I got into bands, and stuff like that. I doubt anyone likes to READ about it, but hey. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] travspence for the survey. It's made me long for the summer, though.

Since I've been writing a lot about dreams as of late, I might as well throw another one into the mix. My dream last night involved hanging around in some building (which might have been a college dorm) with a bunch of kids. I went for a walk out behind the building with a boy who had a tiny pet owl. I remember the street back there had a car dealership, which I kept noticing for some reason. There was more to it than that, but I can't remember what. I think there was one point where the building turned into a video game, and some monsters attacked in the lobby.

My friend Ben ([livejournal.com profile] toddler_hiway)'s senior quote in our highschool yearbook was "Please don't pull me out/this is how I would want to go". (I think; it was one of those types of lines from that song; perhaps "I'm relaxed in the undertow"; either way.) I think it's kinda funny how they did the numbering of questions, where there's a few bands that get 2 questions, and some that get 1. Even with the duplicated questions and all.

I think I read somewhere (probably in Song Stories) that "Summer's Cauldron" was a poem before it was a song. Regardless, I've always loved both the lyrics and music.

Yeah, and people taking the survey had better be prepared to say a LOT about Band #3, which gets three questions (7, 10, and 15).
