So, the snow is supposed to be coming soon, which means people are buying up as much bread and milk as possible. I think the REAL reason why they do this isn't because they're planning on making a huge stack of French toast, but because they're using them in some kind of ancient pagan ritual reminiscent of Christian communion, in an attempt to pacify the gods of winter. Considering that milk is used in place of wine, I'm inclined to think the deity in question is Audhumla, the celestial cow of Norse legend, but I have no further evidence for this.

Your Candy Heart Says "Hug Me"

A total sweetheart, you always have a lot of love to give out.
Your heart is open to where ever love takes you!

Your ideal Valentine's Day date: a surprise romantic evening that you've planned out

Your flirting style: lots of listening and talking

What turns you off: fighting and conflict

Why you're hot: you're fearless about falling in love

Mind you, I don't actually want to EAT this candy heart. It's widely known that those things are made of bone meal and earwig honey.

I've now finished reading Al Franken's newest book, The Truth (with Jokes). I have to say I liked it, but that was no surprise. [livejournal.com profile] bethje had let me borrow her copies of Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot and Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, and I enjoyed them muchly (assuming that's a real word). I'm sure it helps that I agree with most of Franken's political positions, but I also like his writing style. All three of these books were quick reads for me. In The Truth, I especially liked the chapter on Social Security; but I also the part on how blatantly false the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks on Kerry were to be interesting, and the chapter on Tom DeLay pretty disturbing. It seems that a common allegation against Franken is that he uses just as much deception and distortion as the people he's discrediting. I don't know for sure whether every word of Franken's books is true, but he DOES site sources, and he comes across as a nice, funny guy. I don't know how he is in person, obviously, but that's the sense I get of his public persona. And I think that's one important thing that the people criticizing the infamous Amazon promotional video seem to be missing. I don't feel like hunting it up, but one of the reviews said something like, "People who found this funny probably wouldn't think Rush Limbaugh doing the same thing was!" (albeit probably with considerably worse spelling and grammar). But I think part of the humor is that it's out of character for Franken, who really doesn't come across as the kind of guy who would ever hit somebody with a chair. Limbaugh, on the other hand, makes much of his career out of being outrageously mean toward anyone who disagrees with him. So no, Limbaugh hitting someone with a chair WOULDN'T be funny, but more because of his personality than his political affiliation. And so as not to be totally partisan, I'll mention that, say, Michael Moore hitting someone with a chair probably wouldn't work either.
