Can't figure any lyrics out
Jan. 28th, 2006 08:17 pmToday, I bought the Decemberists EP, The Tain. I also considered getting the 16 Military Wives single, but I decided against it, at least for the time being.
After that, I went grocery shopping. I paid for my food (mostly frozen stuff, because I am such a healthy eater :P) with a debit card, and asked for $40 cash back. After I had left the store, I realized that the cashier hadn't given me the money, so I went back with my receipt to ask about it. I was afraid I would have to go through a lot of rigamarole to get my money, and I wouldn't have really blamed the store if I had. I mean, I've been scammed while working as a cashier, and I know what some rip-off artists are capable of. Fortunately, the guy remembered, and said it was a common problem with the new card machines. They apparently don't actually let the cashier KNOW that the customer has asked for cash back.
My top CD-ROM drive (which is actually a DVD-ROM drive, but I've never used it for that purpose) won't recognize CD's anymore. It used to, so I have no idea what the problem is. I can use the bottom one, but it would be nice to have both drives function properly.

Name 10 things that bring you a moment of joy, and tag 4 friends to do the same
I haven't been in a particularly joyful mood as of late, but, hey, I've been tagged, so I don't see as I have much choice. :P I won't tag anyone else, though.
1. Finishing something I've been working on for a while.
2. Hearing the beginning of a song I love.
3. Taking the first bite of a piece of pizza.
4. Seeing a fun meme that I can do on someone else's journal.
5. Defeating a major boss in a video game.
6. Getting a new book or CD.
7. Discovering something new in a book I've read before.
8. Being temporarily free from obligations.
9. Receiving e-mail with actual content.
10. Getting an unexpected call from
bethje.
rockinlibrarian,
majellen, and
rockonliz all did this music guessing game. Here are the official rules, which I didn't actually follow:
1. Go to your playlist.
2. Hit shuffle.
3. Choose the first twenty songs - YOU CANNOT SKIP ONE. If it's embarrassing you just have to live with it.
4. With those twenty songs you must post a lyric from each of the songs.
5. See if anybody can guess what songs they are from. If they are guessed you can cross them out. Try to get rid of all of them.
The problem with these rules is that I kept getting stuff that I didn't really even know (most of it from mix CD's), so I could hardly expect other people to know it. So I did skip some stuff. I also decided I'd only use up to two songs by the same artist (or very closely related artists). (EDIT: After looking them over again, and I realized that three of them actually ARE from the same artist, but I'm not going to change it now.) All of these songs really DID come up on random, though. Some of them are incredibly easy--if about 75% of my friends list doesn't recognize #6 immediately, I'll be shocked--but others are quite difficult. And I'm not crossing them out when people get them. If you want to go ahead and guess without reading anyone else's answers, go ahead. I COULD screen comments, I suppose, but I don't think it's worth it. I don't expect many people to do this anyway, but I hope a few do.
1. All wrapped up in a winter wardrobe, she hurries by so fast.
2. The grass in the valley is starting to die, and out in the distance the whippoorwills cry.
3. If we get bored, we'll move to California.
4. Anyway, my eyes are not accustomed to this light. And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete.
5. I call out the numbers. The rumble of collective thunder today, the wages are down.
6. But he doesn't get nervous, she's not really there.
7. He resides on a beach in a town where I am going to live.
8. All rights that you cannot buy away, a lease that I want you to pay.
9. I was wearing eyeliner. She was wearing eyeliner.
10. Someone in this town is trying to burn their playhouse down.
11. You get to know a morning face. You get to join the human race.
12. Yes, we may be hidden by rags, but we've something they'll never have.
13. It's 4:29, and out on the airwaves, midnight DJ plays for the lost and lonely, and their late-night ways.
14. Don't ever give your love for free, but then again, don't ever let it be sold.
15. I'd really like to be with you, 'cause we can be so dark. It was only by the grace of you that I got this attitude.
16. I heard the eternal footman bought himself a bike today.
17. Don't write naughty words on walls if you can't spell.
18. As I shoved off, I took a good look behind me. My tether gone, a greater binding awaiting.
19. It's a love that lasts forever. It's a love that has no past.
20. Throw your homework onto the fire.
Good luck!

Date: 2006-01-29 03:56 am (UTC)I originally also had John Linnell's "The Songs Of The Fifty States" on there, but I figured that was too much TMBG. Later, I realized there were three songs on there from another artist, but it's too late to change it now.

3. Vamos
7. Dig for Fire
9. Subbacultcha
I didn't read the other comments too closely so I may be repeating these...I know 12 is a Smiths song, Hand in Glove I think. 20 is also Smiths, Sheila Take a Bow. 15 is Cracker, I See the Light. 4 is really familiar but I can't name it. And I left off the TMBG songs, but I hope you believe that I do know them. :)

Date: 2006-01-29 04:06 am (UTC)Yeah, I realized that after checking it over again. Oh, well. I mostly just wanted an excuse not to use ANOTHER TMBG song (or, more accurately, a Linnell solo song), because I thought they were just too easy.

That's perfectly all right. It always kind of bugs me when I see one of these on someone else's journal, and think, "Hey, I totally knew that one, but somebody else got it!" So I'm trying to encourage people to reply without looking at the other replies.
All the ones that you named were right, by the way.

Date: 2006-01-29 04:07 am (UTC)Incidentally, "Blue Beret" is now a released song (it's on Fuzzy Warbles), but I would assume the release was some time after the cover was recorded.
