I See Dead Memes

First, a meme from [livejournal.com profile] burningofroissy:

Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" [or just saying you want to participate -ed], and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your journal, and explain what they mean to you.

Mythology

It's been one of my most significant interests for years. I guess I have a special fondness for the myths involving weird monsters.

Oz fandom

Oz has been my first literary love for years now, and I've done a fair amount of my own writing pertaining to L. Frank Baum's fairyland.

Thoughtful essays

Not sure why anything thoughtful would be associated with me, but I think that's definitely the best kind of essay.

Logic

I'm not always (and perhaps not even usually) a logical person, but I think I ASPIRE to be. Not necessarily to Vulcan levels or anything, but I appreciate the ability to reason.

Music

Well, it hath charms to soothe the savage breast, doth it not?

Okay, what else? Well, [livejournal.com profile] bethje and I watched The Sixth Sense last night. I don't know how much it was ruined for me by already knowing the twist ending, but I can usually enjoy movies (and books) even when I do know what's going to happen. It's the journey that's important. Here, however, the journey was incredibly slow-paced (although nowhere near as bad as The Village, from what Beth tells me), and didn't seem to consist of much other than hints that Bruce Willis' character is dead. And at the end, they pretty much hit you over the head with it, as if M. Night were thinking, "Even the dumbest viewer will understand the twist in THIS movie!" I'm not sure why it was a big hit back in its day.

I really liked The Sixth Sense, but I was pretty young when I saw it so that might have made a bit of a difference. I always figured the journey was that in order for his spirit to rest he had to help this kid that was identical to the patient he thought he helped who ended up shooting him. Maybe I read into it too much?

My little brother completely ruined it for my cousin. The two years later break came and my cousin said "But, that doesn't make sense for him to have survived!" My brother replied, "Yeah! That's the point! Get it? He's dead!"

I guess I'd be interested in meme-ing it up. :D

Yeah, I hate when people do things like that. Like I said, there are movies where it doesn't really matter (hey, I enjoy the Harry Potter films, and I already know what's going to happen because I've read the books), but that might be one where it does.

Anyway, here are your words:

1. Classic rock
2. The Grateful Dead
3. They Might Be Giants
4. Chucks
5. Paganism

UUUGGGHHH, The Village. Just uuuuggghghhhhhh. I can honestly say I didn't see it coming, though. Unlike The Sixth Sense where I figured it out like halfway through the film.

You are thoughtful, though. You bring in a lot of different and interesting information in your essays, and I enjoy reading them.

I still really like the Sixth Sense, even though I figured out the "surprise" early on. I thought it was well directed and well written, and well acted, above all. Toni Collette is wonderful. I still watch it and boo-hoo, because the emotional connections for the kid make an arc that rings true to me. Having parents who are "elsewhere" I'd like to think somehow that we could see each other over some dimensional divide, even for a minute or two. It's sentimentality done well, in my opinion.

Imagine my surprise when M. Night Shamalan couldn't make another decent movie to save his soul. The Village/ Feh.

Was he out on Highway 61 in the late 90s?

I actually didn't know until the end. It really is one of those movies were it is better not to know :). It only feels like he is hitting you over the head if you already know IMHO...
